A Miami resident was sentenced this Tuesday to 27 years in federal prison for soliciting and paying a 14-year-old Cuban girl to produce child sexual abuse material, a case uncovered when he returned from Cuba with hundreds of images and videos stored on his cell phone.
The convicted individual, Ariel Espinosa, 63 years old, received a sentence of 324 months in prison imposed by federal judge K. Michael Moore of the Southern District of Florida, after pleading guilty to attempted production and transportation of child sexual abuse material, reported the Southern District of Florida Office of the United States Attorney.
The investigation began on August 24, 2025, when Espinosa landed at Miami International Airport on a flight from Holguín.
During a secondary inspection, agents from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reviewed his cell phone and found hundreds of images and videos of child sexual abuse, as well as conversations he was having with the Cuban minor.
According to court documents, Espinosa was aware that the victim was 14 years old and, despite this, repeatedly asked her to produce sexually explicit material. Investigations also found that he made electronic payments to obtain that content, directing the teenager on what to do.
Federal prosecutor Jason A. Reding Quiñones characterized the defendant's behavior as "calculated, exploitative, and profoundly cruel."
"Ariel Espinosa knew that his victim was only 14 years old, yet he repeatedly paid her and instructed her to create sexually explicit material for his own satisfaction. This 27-year sentence holds him accountable and sends a clear message: those who abuse minors, whether here or abroad, will face serious consequences," he stated.
The investigation was led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Miami, with support from the HSI Regional Attaché for the Caribbean and Customs and Border Protection. Federal Assistant Attorney Andrea Montes was in charge of the judicial process.
U.S. federal law mandates a minimum sentence of 15 years and a maximum of 30 years for this type of crime when it is a first offense. The sentence imposed on Espinosa, 27, was very close to the maximum allowed by law, reflecting the seriousness with which the court viewed the case.
Due to his age, 63 years, Espinosa would be around 90 years old when he fully serves his sentence.
The case adds to other recent proceedings related to the sexual exploitation of Cuban minors. In March 2026, a federal jury in Miami found Earl Richard Clouser, a resident of Pennsylvania, guilty of attempting to produce abusive sexual material with a 15-year-old girl in Cuba, in an investigation also led by HSI Miami.
In parallel, Florida toughened penalties in July of this year against sexual offenses committed against minors, amid a legislative and judicial offensive to combat child exploitation.
After the sentence was announced, the Federal Prosecutor's Office for the Southern District of Florida reiterated on social media its commitment to prosecuting this type of crime.
"The federal authorities will continue identifying predators, stopping their harm, and ensuring that children are protected, regardless of where the victims are located," the institution stated.
