A crocodile appeared on the campus of a high school in central Florida while the American football team was practicing in a nearby area, prompting several agents to intervene to capture it and remove the danger.
The Osceola County Sheriff's Office reported on Facebook that the reptile was found in the bullpen of Tohopekaliga High School's baseball field.
The incident occurred on Thursday, July 30, as confirmed by local media ClickOrlando.
The school resource officer alerted about the presence of the animal and requested assistance from other agents. Sergeant Drew from Community Services led the response along with several members of the sheriff's office.
The images released by the authorities show agents immobilizing the alligator near the sports facilities and later transporting it along a dock while keeping its body, tail, and head under control.
The animal was captured and taken to a habitat deemed suitable.
The intervention eliminated the risk for students, school staff, and participants in the sports programs, while activities at the center were able to resume without any new incidents.
The sheriff's office reminded that alligators are native animals of Florida and can be found near almost any freshwater source, including lakes, ponds, canals, and retention basins.
Authorities urged parents to teach their children to maintain a safe distance and not to approach, feed, or provoke these reptiles. Minors should also alert a trusted adult immediately upon spotting one.
The warning includes avoiding allowing children to play unsupervised near the banks, because alligators can remain hidden even if they are not visible from the surface.
Pets must be kept on a leash and away from the water, as they can attract these animals.
Authorities stressed that no one should attempt to capture or handle a crocodile found in an unsafe location.
The case of Tohopekaliga High School ended without any injuries or reported damages, but it once again highlighted that the presence of alligators near sports areas, schools, and other busy spaces is part of a coexistence that requires distance, supervision, and a professional response.
This is not the first time one of these reptiles has appeared inside or near educational facilities in Florida. In 2019, an eight-foot and two-inch was found in a primary school in Palmetto, near a playground and before classes started.
Another incident occurred in 2016, when the Davie Police captured an 11-foot alligator near two schools. The animal weighed about 450 pounds and was removed with the help of volunteers.
Encounters are also common in other public spaces. The Jupiter Police removed a roughly 12-foot, 750-pound alligator from a park in 2019, while in 2024 another specimen measuring approximately ten feet was recorded walking across a golf course in southwest Florida.
