A Cuban is in critical condition after suffering burns on almost 100% of his body during an explosion at a house that occurred Thursday morning in Monterrey, in the Mexican state of Nuevo León.
The victim, preliminarily identified as Erick, was found by emergency teams and, according to initial reports, was the sole occupant of the house located at number 527 on Macario Pérez street in the Buenos Aires neighborhood, reported the local outlet Consulta Monterrey.
Additionally, according to Telediario Monterrey, a puppy was also found at the residence, which reportedly sustained an injury to one of its legs. Rescuers attempted to provide care; however, the animal was defensive due to the stress caused by the explosion.
The explosion was reported to the emergency service 911 at 8:02 AM, after neighbors heard a loud bang and saw smoke and flames coming from the upper floor of the building. Within ten minutes, members of Civil Protection, firefighters, police, and paramedics arrived at the scene.
The staff at the Medical Emergency Regulatory Center (CRUM) attended to the young man on site and confirmed that he had suffered severe burns over nearly his entire body surface, leading to his urgent transfer to the "Dr. José Eleuterio González" University Hospital, where he remains under specialized care.
According to initial reports from Civil Protection in Monterrey, the preliminary hypothesis points to a buildup of gas inside the residence, although official determinations of what caused the explosion will be made by specialized experts.
The explosion caused severe damage on the second floor of the house and sparked a fire that prompted the response of five emergency agencies. As a precautionary measure, authorities evacuated a neighboring residence while firefighters extinguished the flames and specialists inspected the gas and electrical systems to rule out any further risks.
So far, the authorities have not provided an updated medical report on Erick's condition nor have they informed whether family members or representatives from the Cuban consulate have come to offer assistance. The investigation continues to clarify the exact causes of the incident.
