A Cuban woman transformed a simple bottle of oil into her most exclusive accessory after her husband asked her to wear "the most expensive thing she had" for a night out.
The protagonist of the video, identified on Instagram as @norma.morado, appears dressed in black, wearing sunglasses and holding a still-sealed bottle of cooking oil with complete seriousness, as if it were a luxury handbag.
"My husband told me: let's go out, wear the most expensive thing you have," reads the text accompanying the images.
The Cuban herself completed the joke in the comments: "This is the latest trend in fashion."
The Reel, posted on Friday on Instagram, sparked hundreds of reactions from Cubans who quickly understood the reference. Amid the skyrocketing prices affecting the island, having a bottle of oil has become almost a luxury.
One of the most popular comments, with over 640 reactions, even suggested hiding such "wealth."
"Norma, please take down the video; your neighbors will see it and then come to steal the gold you have in the kitchen," wrote a user.
Another comment, with over 300 reactions, adapted a well-known phrase about couple relationships to the Cuban context: "Stay with the one who has oil, because anyone can have a house and a car."
And someone found a new name for the product: "It's no longer oil; now it's called liquid GOLD."
The bottle ended up becoming a kind of improvised haute couture piece.
"And what if I add a carton of eggs to make the outfit more aesthetic?" suggested a user.
Another noticed an important detail: the bottle was unopened.
"And it's sealed; you go ahead and show off, ma'am," he joked.
There were even those who requested the address of the house "for a project," while another user took the comparison even further: "Right now, with the price of a liter, we can buy a solar panel."
Among all the jokes, one particularly summed up the new status that the product has acquired in Cuba: "Not even a Birkin comes close to that accessory."
But behind the improvised parade and the laughter, there is a much less amusing situation.
The price of cooking oil has experienced a significant rise in Cuba in recent months, making it yet another essential product that is difficult for many families to afford.
The situation has made oil a recurring theme in Cuban humor over the past few weeks.
The comedian Loky Kubah surpassed 1.4 million views with a sketch in which a buyer tries to gather the money to purchase oil while the seller raises the price from 2,500 to 3,500 pesos before he can complete the purchase.
Days later, the creator Yenelis López jokingly offered to exchange a sealed liter of cooking oil for a beach house with a pool, a car, and a generator, adding that she even expected to receive change.
