The Cuban journalist Javier Díaz will take over as the host of the 6 p.m. news program on N+ Univision Miami starting next Monday, as reported by El Nuevo Herald based on sources consulted anonymously.
Díaz will take the position left by his compatriot Ambrosio Hernández, who was dismissed this week as part of a new round of cuts at TelevisaUnivision that also affected news director Yolanda Zugasti and other professionals from the network.
According to the Herald, the host will share the screen with Jenny Padura, who had already been part of the news team's presenters since April 2024.
Díaz has been associated with TelevisaUnivision for nine years and until now he was the sole host of the weekend news program, a role he took on in October 2024 when he replaced Mario Vallejo in that slot.
Its addition to the Monday to Friday edition represents one of the major recent changes within the local news team of Univision following the departures of several professionals, including the news director Yolanda Zugasti.
The network had not yet officially confirmed the appointment when consulted by the Nuevo Herald.
In an email response sent on August 12, TelevisaUnivision indicated that it was still evaluating how to fill the vacancies and would soon inform who would take on those positions.
Born in San José de las Lajas, Mayabeque province, Díaz graduated in Social Communication in 2011 from the Agrarian University of Havana and worked as a presenter for the news program of Cubavisión Internacional before leaving the island.
In 2015, he embarked on a migratory journey that took him to the southern border of the United States.
The journalist himself has explained on various occasions that this personal experience allowed him to develop a unique connection with the stories of immigrants that he later covered in the United States.
His first opportunity on Miami television came with Telemundo 51, where he covered the death of Fidel Castro in November 2016 from the Versailles restaurant on Calle Ocho.
Since November 2018, he has been working at Univision, where he has gained recognition for reports on Cuba, breaking news, and investigations related to viewer complaints.
The journalist has been openly critical of the Cuban regime from his platform in Miami.
In addition to his television career, Díaz has developed a significant presence on social media, where he has amassed over a million followers, according to the article.
In an interview on the podcast The World of Darwin, he dismissed the myth of "free education" propagated by the dictatorship: "We need to move past that story. University students endure enough hardship to earn that degree and obtain a profession."
In the same context, he reflected on the role of communicators: "As a culture, as a people, we must leave a legacy for future generations, just as our founding figures did."
The appointment comes amid a major restructuring at TelevisaUnivision, which announced hundreds of layoffs in December 2025 and in January 2026 eliminated nearly its entire digital team based in the United States, affecting 29 positions in that country, Mexico, and Colombia.
