The police in Hialeah made an arrest this Sunday following the widespread dissemination of a video in which a woman can be heard screaming from inside a van that was driving recklessly through the streets of that city in South Florida, according to the Hialeah Police Department.
The incident occurred on Friday night and was captured in images that were published on the Instagram account of OnlyinDade, one of the most followed local news platforms in Miami-Dade County, known for documenting unusual events in the area.
In the video shared by OnlyinDade, a woman can be seen screaming and seemingly trying to exit the vehicle while it was moving down the road. Shortly after, three cars began to follow the van in what appeared to be a spontaneous attempt by bystanders to assist the woman.
The Hialeah police confirmed that their officers became aware of the clip circulating on social media and responded to the incident that same night. "We want to assure our community that the officers responded to this incident when it occurred last night and an arrest was made," the department stated in an official statement.
Authorities described what was captured in the images as "a van driving recklessly while the screams of a woman are heard inside."
Until this Sunday, the police had not revealed the identity of the arrested individual or the charges that would be brought against them. There was also no information regarding the condition of the woman or whether the case could be linked to domestic violence, a possible kidnapping, or another type of crime.
The department indicated that the investigation remains active and that additional information will be disclosed "as necessary."
The incident caused alarm in Hialeah, a city with a majority Hispanic population and one of the highest concentrations of Cubans in the entire United States, located in Miami-Dade County. The rapid spread of the video through OnlyinDade contributed to the authorities acting swiftly, a pattern that has been repeated in other recent cases in South Florida, such as the arrest of a man in Hialeah for attempting to kidnap his ex-girlfriend or the case of a Cuban accused of attempting to assault his partner in that same city.
The Hialeah police did not specify when they will provide a formal update on the case, which remains under investigation.
