opens this Monday, August 17, with mixed behavior: two currencies increase in price while another remains unchanged.

At 10:00 a.m. (Cuban local time), the euro shows a slight increase, while the MLC stands out with a significant advance at the opening.

The US dollar, on the other hand, remains unchanged compared to the previous day.

Summary of informal market rates

  • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 664 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 760 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 464 CUP (indicative value, limited data).

The dollar remains unchanged but is below last week’s value

The US dollar is trading at 664 Cuban pesos (CUP) on the informal market, with a buying rate of 660 CUP and a selling rate of 668 CUP.

Exchange Rate Evolution

It remains unchanged compared to the previous day, repeating the same rate as on Sunday.

However, the weekly perspective shows a decline: seven days ago, the dollar was at 673 pesos, indicating a drop of 8.5 pesos (-1.3%) during that period.

Compared to 30 days ago, when it was at 663 pesos, the increase is minimal, just 1.5 pesos (+0.2%), although this comparison may partly reflect methodological adjustments of the index.

In the last 30 days, the dollar has fluctuated between a low of 663 and a high of 675 pesos in the informal market.

Continues to set the trend in the informal market amid a context of structural scarcity of foreign currency.

The euro rises and establishes itself as the most expensive currency

The euro starts this Monday with an increase of 2.5 pesos compared to the previous session, standing at a average value of 760 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a buy rate of 750 and a sell rate of 770 CUP.

This represents an increase of 0.3% compared to the 758 pesos from Sunday.

In the weekly comparison, however, the euro has recorded a decline of 15.5 pesos (-2%) compared to the 776 pesos from seven days ago.

Compared to 30 days ago, when it was priced at 757 pesos, the profit is 3 pesos (+0.4%), although this reference should be interpreted cautiously as it may include methodological adjustments.

In the last month, the euro has reached a high of 790 and a low of 755 pesos.

Exceeds the dollar by 96 pesos, consolidating its dominant position in the Cuban parallel market.

The MLC, the largest movement of the day, with indicative value

The MLC shows the most notable progress in this opening: it stands at around 464 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a purchase rate of 441 and a selling rate of 486 CUP.

This represents an increase of 18 pesos compared to the 446 of the previous day (+4%).

In the weekly comparison, the MLC has also gained ground: seven days ago, it was priced at 458 pesos, which indicates a rise of 6 pesos (+1.3%). Compared to 30 days ago, when it was at 433 pesos, the accumulated increase is 31 pesos (+7.2%), although this reference may include methodological adjustments to the index.

In the last month, the MLC has fluctuated between a low of 413 and a high of 496 pesos.

However, it is important to note that today’s data is marked with a low trading volume warning, so it should be considered a reference value.

Without a physical existence, its use is limited to the state-run businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.

The gap with the official rate, a reflection of the crisis

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), at 628 CUP per dollar and 727 CUP per euro, remains well below the values that prevail in everyday practice in the informal currency market.

The difference is 36 pesos in the case of the dollar and 33 pesos in the case of the euro, a gap that highlights the disparity between the official economy and the reality that Cubans face on a daily basis.

Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and does not meet the actual demand for foreign currency from the population.

In the last 30 days, the official dollar has risen from 592 to 628 CUP, and the official euro from 677 to 727 CUP, reflecting a sustained devaluation of the peso in the official channel that still does not reach the levels of the parallel market.

In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state wages, and a growing partial dollarization of the economy, each fluctuation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans.
