The pitcher Brander Guevara, one of the most valued prospects of young Cuban pitching, broke his ties with the Cuban Baseball Federation and decided not to return to Cuba after his participation with the Conspiradores de Querétaro in the Mexican Baseball League.
According to Pelota Cubana USA, the approximately 22-year-old pitcher, originally from Artemisa, will continue his career independently, outside the control of the Federation. Among his possible next steps is the attempt to sign with a Major League organization, although no agreement has been confirmed so far.
The departure of Guevara represents a significant loss for the international plans of Cuban baseball. The young pitcher was regarded as "the main figure of Cuban pitching ahead of the Under-23 World Cup next November," as noted by Pelota Cubana USA. This tournament will take place in Nicaragua from November 6 to November 15.
Guevara had been activated by the Conspirators of Querétaro on June 1, after waiting for his Mexican visa, becoming the fourth active Cuban in the club alongside Yurisbel Gracial, Rangel Ravelo, and Henry Urrutia.
In the Mexican League, he made at least six starts with a record of 1-1 and an ERA of 7.41. His best performance was on July 11, when he pitched five innings, allowing just one run and striking out nine against the Olmecas de Tabasco.
Before his departure abroad, Guevara had made a significant mark on national baseball. In the 64th National Series with the Cazadores de Artemisa, he recorded 100 strikeouts and an ERA of 4.07 over 79.2 innings, being one of the standout figures of the tournament. In May of this year, he shone with six scoreless innings and seven strikeouts in a 14-0 victory for Artemisa over Industriales in the IV Elite League.
It was also used as a reinforcement by Matanzas in the III Baseball Champions League, where he closed a crucial game with the last three outs, two by strikeout, in a comeback 9-8 against the CTBC Brothers.
“His decision adds to the ongoing loss of young talent that has affected baseball on the Island in recent years, with players choosing to pursue their careers independently in search of opportunities in professional circuits,” summarized Pelota Cubana USA.
Mexico has established itself as one of the main exit routes: players travel with permission from the Federation to compete in the Mexican League and then choose not to return. In April 2025, Rafael Viñales and Denis Peña did not return to Cuba after a tour of Las Tunas in that country.
In the 2024-2025 international cycle, around 40 Cuban prospects signed with MLB organizations. In 2026, the trend continued with names like Rodelvis Santiesteban, Luis Almeida, Cristian Rego, Karel Naranjo, and Rothelmnay Marquetti, among others.
