A 32-year-old Cuban has been charged with the homicide of another island resident, aged 38, who died after being stabbed on Thursday night in the Cordón neighborhood of Montevideo.

The crime occurred at the corner of Uruguay Avenue and Vázquez, where the victim was attacked with a knife while being chased by several people, according to the Uruguayan media Subrayado.

Despite the serious injuries, the man managed to take refuge in a nearby business. There, he reported that he had been threatened and assaulted during the chase.

He was transferred in critical condition to Maciel Hospital, where he was taken to surgery, but subsequently passed away.

After the investigations, the Police arrested one of their compatriots and placed him at the disposal of the Prosecutor's Office. The Justice system ordered that he remains in preventive detention until February 17, 2027, while the investigations continue.

The case is in the hands of the Homicide Department of the Direction of Complex Facts and the Homicide Prosecutor's Office of 1st shift. So far, the possible motive for the crime has not been disclosed, nor have the identities of the victim and the accused been released.

The homicide adds to other violent incidents that have recently struck the Cuban community in Montevideo. In April, José Eduardo Cuéllar Arteaga, a 31-year-old Cuban delivery driver, was shot and killed during an attempted motorcycle theft.

At the beginning of August, another 28-year-old Cuban was stabbed to death in a boarding house in the Paso de la Arena neighborhood following an argument with a Venezuelan neighbor.

Uruguay has become one of the destinations for the growing Cuban emigration in South America. In 2025, more than 22,000 Cubans entered the country, nearly three times the number from the previous year.
