A 28-year-old Cuban lost his life on Friday night after being attacked with a knife in a boarding house in the Paso de la Arena neighborhood in western Montevideo, Uruguay, as confirmed by the local press based on sources from the country's Ministry of the Interior.
The attack occurred after an argument between the victim and a neighbor from the same boarding house, a Venezuelan citizen who grabbed a knife and stabbed the young Cuban multiple times.
According to Subrayado, the property is located near the streets Curuzú Cuatiá and Mauricio Llamas, and the victim had cuts on the neck and stomach.
The injured person—whose identity has not been disclosed—was rushed to the Hospital del Cerro, where he later died due to the severity of his injuries.
The attacker, identified and on the run
The Venezuelan citizen responsible for the attack fled the scene after the aggression, and as of the closing of this note, remains at large.
Telenoche reported that the assailant has been fully identified and is being actively sought by the police, who are working to clarify the exact circumstances of the crime.
Montevideo Portal reported that authorities are actively searching for the suspect in the crime, and that the investigation is ongoing.
A pattern of violence that impacts the Cuban community
This crime adds to a string of violent deaths that have shaken the Cuban community in Uruguay in recent months.
On April 24, the delivery driver José Eduardo Cuéllar Arteaga, 31 years old and originally from Manicaragua, Villa Clara, was murdered in Carrasco Norte with a shot to the chest while working for Pedidos Ya during an attempted robbery of his motorcycle.
That crime was the third involving a delivery worker in just 10 days in Montevideo, and it sparked a massive protest of about 500 workers in front of the Executive Tower.
"That boy was right there delivering his order when the ñeri showed up; they were going to take his motorcycle. The boy let go of the motorcycle, and right then, he was shot in the chest and is dead," said a coworker of Cuéllar Arteaga while describing what happened.
In June, the police arrested a 15-year-old teenager as the second suspect in that crime; the first, aged 16, had voluntarily surrendered with his mother.
Uruguay, a major destination for Cuban emigration
The new homicide occurs in a context of strong growth in the Cuban presence in the country. In 2025, over 22,000 Cubans entered Uruguay. This is the highest number ever recorded, according to the National Migration Directorate, with a net migration balance of nearly 15,000 people.
That same year, 13,852 Cubans obtained the Uruguayan ID for the first time, the highest number among all non-Urguyan foreigners.
Many of these migrants are employed in sectors with high exposure to violence, such as home delivery, amid a deteriorating security context.
The first half of the year closed with 195 homicides in Uruguay, a 6.6% increase compared to the same period in 2025, with Montevideo being the most affected department, recording 114 cases between January and June.
