A 48-year-old Cuban citizen died after experiencing a medical emergency during a flight from London to Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, authorities reported to local media in that country.
According to a preliminary report from the Bahamian police, the passenger suffered a medical emergency while the plane was en route and subsequently became unresponsive, reported Eyewitness News.
After landing in Nassau, emergency medical personnel continued resuscitation efforts, but the man remained unconscious and without vital signs.
The police stated that, for the time being, there are no suspicions of criminal acts or the involvement of third parties. An autopsy will need to determine the exact cause of death, while the investigation remains ongoing.
So far, authorities have not revealed the identity of the Cuban nor provided information on where he lived, whether he was traveling with others, or what his final destination was. The police report also does not identify the airline or specify the nature of the medical emergency he experienced, adds Caribbean Pulse.
A journey of over nine hours
The direct connection between London and Nassau is operated by British Airways from Heathrow Airport, with a flight time of approximately nine hours. However, there is currently no official confirmation that the Cuban traveled on a plane from that airline.
Serious medical emergencies aboard aircraft are rare. When a person becomes unresponsive during a flight, the crew can initiate resuscitation maneuvers and request assistance from healthcare professionals among the passengers, while the captain assesses whether it is necessary to divert the plane based on the circumstances.
In this case, the aircraft continued on to Nassau, and once on the ground, emergency teams attempted to revive the Cuban citizen without success.
The Bahamian authorities have not announced when the results of the autopsy will be available or if they will later disclose the identity of the deceased.
