Firefighters rescue a man who fell into a well in Holguín alive

A man was rescued alive after falling to the bottom of a well while carrying out excavation work in the area of Loma del Caguayo, in Holguín. The victim sustained multiple injuries and had to be urgently transferred to a hospital.

The incident occurred in the late afternoon to evening on Tuesday, according to information from Realidades desde Holguín, a spokesperson page for the regime linked to the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), which described the operation as a "successful rescue."

According to that source, the man was working on the excavation of the well when, while trying to climb out, he lost control and fell to the bottom.

As a result of the impact, he sustained bruises in various parts of his body and was trapped with "clear signs of injuries," prompting the activation of the emergency protocol.

Specialized personnel from the Holguín Fire Department, part of the Rescue and Salvage unit, intervened to rescue the man from the location.

The rescue team used confined space rescue techniques and managed to "extract him alive from the well," according to the publication.

Once on the surface, a neighbor urgently transported the injured person to the nearest hospital to be assessed by doctors and to determine the extent of their injuries.

The source did not later report the patient's diagnosis or provide additional details about their health condition.

The incident adds to another rescue carried out at the beginning of this month in the Loma de la Cruz de Holguín, where firefighters and personnel from the Integrated Medical Emergency System assisted a citizen who had fallen and suffered a fracture and other injuries.

In May as well, members of the Fire Department rescued a 73-year-old man who was trapped by the rising waters of the Marañón River.

The man showed bruises from a fall and a possible hip fracture.

Holguín also has the precedent of the 2023 operational complex to rescue Fernando Herrera Ramírez, a 63-year-old worker who was trapped in a well in the municipality of Frank País.

The rescuers took more than 24 hours to reach him after a landslide left him trapped while he was carrying out maintenance work.

Accidents related to wells have also recently occurred in other provinces.

In Bayamo, a woman fell into an uncovered well this month and had to be taken to the hospital on an electric motorbike after being rescued, as there was no ambulance available.
