A driver was arrested in Matanzas after allegedly causing a head-on collision in Peñas Altas, leaving the scene, and seriously injuring a woman who died several days later.

The officialist profile Con Todos La Victoria, a spokesperson for the regime and affiliated with the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), reported this Wednesday the capture of the man, identified by that source as Yuldreff Antonio Monzón.

According to the post, the accident occurred a few days ago at the traffic light of Peñas Altas, when a gray Hyundai Elantra "crossed the forbidden line" and collided head-on with a Dongfeng EX1 electric vehicle belonging to Transtur.

A woman was seriously injured in the collision and remained under medical care for several days, but eventually passed away, the source indicated.

The profile confirmed that the driver of the Hyundai left the scene after the crash and tried to escape.

He was later located and arrested on the street, on Calzada de San Luis, although it is not specified how much time elapsed between the accident and his capture.

The publication did not specify the specific charges the detained individual faces nor did it identify the deceased woman.

An internet user who claimed to have been on duty in the operating room of the Faustino Pérez Provincial Clinical Surgical Teaching Hospital on the day of the accident described the incident as "terrible" and confirmed in the comments that the young woman ultimately passed away.

The woman added that the victim's husband also sustained injuries.

"Unfortunately, the young woman passed away; my condolences to her family and to the husband's family, who was also injured," he wrote.

Another internet user called for changes in Cuban laws and questioned whether similar incidents could happen again.

"If that country and its failed government do not change the laws, everything will remain the same," he stated.

The official profile also stated that the detained individual would have a history of incidents related to threats, injuries, damage, possession of bladed weapons, and violent robbery.

It would not be the first case in Matanzas where a driver is detained after fleeing the scene of a fatal accident.

In July 2024, a driver was arrested after fleeing from an accident that left two dead in Jagüey Grande.

On that occasion, the driver was located days later in Sancti Spíritus.

In addition, in August 2025, another fatal accident on the Vía Blanca led to the report that the driver involved had fled after a collision in which a motorcyclist was killed.

A similar incident occurred in Camagüey in December 2022, when two people died and a minor was injured in a collision between a trailer and a car.

Reports from that time indicated that the truck driver fled, although he was apprehended shortly afterward.
