The Cuban baseball player Luis Robert Jr. etched his name into history books this Tuesday by hitting his tenth home run of the 2026 season with the New York Mets, extending a streak that spans his entire Major League career: at least 10 home runs in each of his seven seasons, according to stats from the official MLB site.
The hit came in the sixth inning of the game against the Milwaukee Brewers, when the Cuban outfielder punished a cutter at 89.4 miles per hour from pitcher Chad Patrick. The shot left the bat at 101.8 mph, traveled 390 feet, and momentarily put the Mets ahead 2-1.
The sequence of home runs per season speaks for itself: 11 in the shortened 2020 campaign, 13 in 2021, 12 in 2022, an explosive 38 in 2023 —still the best figure of his career—, 14 in 2024, 14 in 2025, and now 10 in the current season, according to journalist Francys Romero on his social media.
What makes the achievement even more remarkable is the context in which it occurred. At the end of April, Robert Jr. was placed on the injured list due to a lumbar disc herniation and did not return to the field until July 20, after nearly three months on the sidelines.
Since his return, the Cuban player has showcased a renewed version of himself on the field. Six of his 10 home runs came in just 14 games, a pace that includes the two home runs he hit on August 22 during his return to the south side of Chicago to face the White Sox, his former team, in a Mets victory of 10-5.
That game in Chicago had a special flavor: Robert Jr. was greeted with boos by the local fans and responded with two home runs against his former teammates from the White Sox.
The gardener joined the Mets in January 2026 in a trade with Chicago, in exchange for infielder Luisángel Acuña and pitcher Truman Pauley. New York took on his salary of 20 million dollars for this season.
With the tenth home run this Tuesday, Robert Jr. elevates his career total in MLB to 112 home runs, a figure that cements his place among the most productive Cuban players in the history of Major League Baseball.
In August 2025, still with the White Sox, the Cuban player had joined the 100 home run club in MLB, becoming the 22nd player born in Cuba to reach that milestone and the fourth to do so while wearing the Chicago uniform, alongside José Abreu, Minnie Miñoso, and Alexei Ramírez.
Now, with the season still ongoing, Robert Jr. is trying to finish strong in his first campaign with the Mets and prove that, despite injuries, his power has no expiration date.
