In 2019, he became a sensation in the Minor Leagues after a historic breakthrough at the Triple-A level with the Charlotte Knights. Tom Haberstroh, an NBA journalist based in Charlotte, tweeted that the Cuban was the biggest emerging star in the city since Kemba Walker. A leading candidate for Rookie of the Year in the 2020 Major League season, his five tools dazzled in the National Series and led him to don the Cuba team jersey before turning 20.
Very shortly after, in November 2016, he emigrated to the United States and was quickly signed by the White Sox, who watched him develop until he achieved the 30/30 milestone in 2019 in the Minor Leagues. This ultimately propelled him to the highest level, where he debuted this season after signing a six-year, 50 million dollar contract.
Once the first nine games of the schedule were resolved, his candidacy had gained momentum thanks to an OPS of .979, highlighted by five extra-base hits and six RBIs.
