In 2019, he became the sensation of the Minor Leagues after a historic breakout at the Triple-A level with the Charlotte Knights. Tom Haberstroh, an NBA journalist based in Charlotte, tweeted that the Cuban was the biggest emerging star in the city since Kemba Walker. A leading contender for the Rookie of the Year in the 2020 Major League campaign, his five tools dazzled during the National Series and earned him a spot on the Cuba national team before turning 20.
Not long after, in November 2016, he emigrated to the United States and was quickly acquired by the White Sox, who watched him develop until he achieved the 30/30 milestone in the Minor Leagues in 2019. This ultimately propelled him to the highest level, where he made his debut this season after signing a six-year, 50 million dollar contract.
Once the first nine scheduled matches were settled, his candidacy had gained momentum thanks to an OPS of .979, complemented by five extra-base hits and six RBIs.
