A delivery driver from Miami was arrested on Tuesday, accused of stealing a laptop valued at $849 USD that he had just delivered, after surveillance cameras in a building on Brickell Key Drive captured him committing the theft, according to reported by Local 10.
The accused, Yunior Orlando Fonseca-Jorge, 31 years old, faces a third-degree grand theft charge for the events that occurred on July 25 in that residential building in the Brickell area, according to the arrest report from the Miami Police Department.
Surveillance footage, obtained by an officer who responded to the building following the report, showed Fonseca-Jorge arriving at the property around 12:45 p.m. and placing the package in the mailroom.
Next, according to the investigators, he took a photograph of the package —apparently as proof of delivery— and immediately picked it up again, returned to his vehicle, and left with it.
The victim did not report the theft until two days later, on July 27, when they realized that the package never arrived.
The delivery had been managed through Roadie, an on-demand delivery service that connects independent drivers with customers.
The platform cooperated with the authorities and provided the account data associated with the delivery, which allowed for the identification of Fonseca-Jorge as a suspect.
When a detective first contacted him, the delivery person acknowledged that he had made the delivery, but insisted that he had left the package in the mailroom.
When confronted with the video showing him leaving the building with the package, Fonseca-Jorge replied that he "must have dropped it."
A Miami police officer who already knew him from a prior contact also identified him in the surveillance footage, which strengthened the case against him.
After his arrest on Tuesday, in a recorded interview with detectives, Fonseca-Jorge identified himself in the video and admitted to taking the package when leaving the property.
He was transferred to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center to be processed, and on Wednesday he remained detained with a bail of $2,500 USD.
The case adds to a series of arrests for package thefts involving delivery drivers in the Miami-Dade area.
In August, two UPS employees in Doral were arrested in connection with an electronics theft scheme that resulted in losses exceeding $100,000.
In May, teenage employees of a UPS Store in Miami Lakes stole 80 boxes valued at approximately $40,000.
And in February, a delivery driver was arrested in Miami-Dade accused of stealing Amazon packages worth $1,757.
