Amber Uhler, the representative from Michigan in the Miss USA 2026 pageant, arrives at the competition with a story that goes far beyond the catwalks: five years ago she weighed nearly 300 pounds, a doctor warned her that she was "on the path to an early death," and today, at 41 years old, she is the oldest contestant in this prestigious edition of the pageant.
According to an exclusive report from People magazine, the breaking point came in 2021 when Uhler—a mother of three—went for a routine medical check-up and heard words that changed her life: "You are morbidly obese, you are prediabetic, you are on the path to an early death, and you probably won't live to see your children graduate from high school."
That same weekend, while playing with her children at a trampoline park, she fell into a foam pit and got stuck. Three strong men formed a human chain to try to pull her out, but they couldn't. They almost had to call the fire department.
"I had never felt so humiliated in my life," Uhler confessed. But instead of sinking, she took pen and paper and wrote down a goal that she herself deemed "impossible": to compete in a beauty pageant.
What followed was three and a half years of strict dieting with the Jenny Craig program and consistent exercise, without resorting to modern medications like Ozempic. The result: a loss of 170 pounds —about 77 kilos— which first led her to be crowned Mrs. Florida Universe in 2024 and then to win the title of Mrs. Universe USA 2025.
However, the competition she always had in mind was different. "The contest I always had in my heart was Miss USA, the glamour, the sparkle, being on television, all of that," she stated.
In July 2026, she was appointed Miss Michigan USA through an open casting call, and this Thursday she competes in the 75th edition of Miss USA, which is taking place at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami.
Far from feeling intimidated by the twenty-year-old contestants, Uhler says that the experience has pleasantly surprised her. "My confidence is through the roof here at Miss USA, which is the opposite of what I thought would happen," she admitted. "I thought I would arrive and see the girls in their twenties and feel very insecure, but they have all embraced me."
Even the youngest participants have become her biggest admirers. "Even the teenage contestants are my biggest fans and my cheerleaders, and they encourage me a lot," she said with a laugh.
At 41 years old, Uhler aims to become the oldest Miss USA in the history of the pageant and the first mother to win the title. "I know I'm crazy," she jokes. "I signed up to appear in a bikini on television after losing 170 pounds."
For her, however, the journey was never about the scale. "This journey is not just about a number on a scale. It's about reclaiming my life, believing in miracles, and proving that no dream is too big when you refuse to give up," she wrote on her Instagram account.
"This is the competition I've always dreamed of being a part of, and achieving it has simply been my Cinderella story," concluded Uhler.
