The Diocese of Cienfuegos announced this Thursday the passing of Bishop Juan Francisco Vega Rodríguez, the beloved Father Vega, one of the most cherished priests of the Cuban Catholic Church, who died at the age of 92 after a life entirely dedicated to serving his community.
"Mons. Juan Francisco Vega Rodríguez, our beloved Father Vega, has departed to the House of the Father, after a long life dedicated to the service of God, the Church, and the people he accompanied for more than six decades of priestly ministry," states the statement from the Diocese of Cienfuegos, signed by Jorge Luis Nodal Cordero.
Born in 1934 in Asturias, Spain, Father Vega arrived in Cuba and permanently settled in Cienfuegos, a city that became his home and the setting for his entire dedicated life.
He was ordained a priest on March 1, 1964 in the very Cathedral of Cienfuegos, the same temple where he would later be commemorated decades later.
His journey within the diocese was extraordinary: 33 years as pastor of the Cathedral, more than two decades as Vicar General, involvement in priestly formation, and several years leading the Diocesan Sanctuary of San José.
But the diocesan statement emphasized that his deepest impact is not measured in positions or years: "His true legacy cannot be measured solely in years or pastoral responsibilities; it is in the people."
Generations of people from Cienfuegos received sacraments, comfort, and spiritual support from him. He baptized children who are now adults, blessed marriages, accompanied young people, and guided priests. For many families, saying "Father Vega" meant talking about someone close and beloved.
The last months of the priest were marked by fragility. At the beginning of May, the Diocese reported that he had suffered a fall in his room that caused an intracapsular fracture in his right hip, which kept him under medical care at home. He did not recover from that fragility.
The bishop of the Diocese, Mons. Domingo Oropesa Lorente, called upon the entire diocesan community to pray for the eternal salvation of Father Vega.
His remains will be laid in state tonight at the Holy Cathedral Church of Cienfuegos starting at 7:30 p.m. The funeral mass will take place tomorrow, Friday, at 10:00 a.m., and at 11:00 a.m., the procession to the cemetery and burial will be held.
The statement emphasized the profound significance of the Cathedral being the final place to receive him: it is where he was ordained in 1964, where he dedicated 33 years of ministry as a parish priest, and where he accompanied the joys and sorrows of his people countless times.
"Now it will be that same community that will come to the Cathedral to accompany him," the Diocese stated.
The death of Father Vega adds to a series of losses that have struck the Cuban Catholic Church in 2026: the emeritus bishop of Pinar del Río Jorge Enrique Serpa Pérez passed away in April at the age of 84; Monsignor Silvano Pedroso Montalvo died in June at 73; and Monsignor Enrique Aurelio García passed away in July at the age of 91.
“Thank you, Father Vega. Thank you for your priesthood, for your faithfulness, for your dedication, and for making Cienfuegos your home and this Church your family,” wrote the Diocese as they bid him farewell.
