No one saw it coming, but several videos of young Cubans singing reparto with Christian lyrics have gone viral in recent hours. The peculiar blend of one of the most popular genres of Cuban urban music with messages of faith has not gone unnoticed, and social media has quickly filled with reactions, jokes, and comments of all kinds.
In the videos shared by content creator sayu__dominguez on Instagram, young people are seen gathered and singing with all the energy of religious lyrics.
The videos accumulate thousands of views and comments, and the reply section quickly became a spectacle of its own.
Cuban users brought out their best humor for the occasion. "Let Chocolate know that the neighborhood has been Christianized and it wasn't him," one wrote. Another solemnly declared, "Now is when I say the Choco is my shepherd, amen." There was even someone proclaiming that "the one and only God Chocolate MC has come down," and an urgent notice of "don't take any more holy water."
The events didn't stop there. Someone coined a term that is now circulating as a concept: "The Cristoteca." Another envisioned the liturgical future of the matter: "I can imagine in the prayers: El Choco is my shepherd, no one will throw me down."
"That's why the ship sank, regards, Noah," "There's going to be some shade thrown between Pentecostals, Adventists, Catholics, Christians, and Jehovah's Witnesses," or "Coming soon on tour at the Vatican," said other users jokingly.
Amidst all the jokes, there was also room for reflection. "I see young people of a new generation integrating culture and healthy fun, without ceasing to believe in their God; I see nothing wrong in loving God and living it joyfully," wrote one user. Another was more straightforward: "Christians have the right to enjoy themselves too, but in their own way and with clean music."
Sayu Domínguez, one of the stars of the video, is no stranger to going viral. Last June, the Cuban influencer had another moment that shook social media with a very different video: a direct denunciation of the crisis in Cuba, the three-day blackouts, and the insufficient salaries to afford food, which garnered over 52,000 views. Seeing her now in a festive and carefree tone reveals another side of a generation that, despite everything, still seeks to enjoy life.
The reparto, the urban genre that originated in the popular neighborhoods of Havana and Cuban youth have turned into an international trend, continues to show that it has no limits, neither musical nor spiritual.
And while the theological-repartition debate continues in the comments, one thing became clear: "Oh yes, a blessed distribution."
