The informal currency market in Cuba closed this Thursday, August 27, with movements in opposite directions: the dollar rose again, the euro declined, and the MLC saw a strong surge, although there's limited data available on the latter.
At 8:00 p.m. Cuban time, the US dollar (USD) stood at 670 Cuban pesos (CUP), one peso more than the 669 CUP recorded at the end of the previous trading day.
The US dollar continues its upward trend from the past few days, accumulating an increase of 7 pesos over the week, rising from 663 CUP recorded seven days ago.
The euro falls after several days at elevated levels
In the opposite direction moved the euro (EUR), which closed this Thursday at 756 CUP, below the 758 CUP of the previous day.
Exchange Rate Evolution
Despite the decline, the European currency remains 86 pesos above the dollar and retains a weekly gain of 6 CUP, as it was valued at 750 CUP a week ago.
In the last 30 days, the euro has fluctuated between 746 and 788 CUP, reflecting the volatility that continues to characterize the Cuban informal market.
The MLC rises, but with caution due to the low data volume
The most noticeable movement of the day corresponded to the freely convertible currency (MLC), which reached an average value of around 469 CUP, compared to 458 CUP the previous day.
The increase is around 11 pesos in just 24 hours. However, this quotation should be interpreted with caution due to the low trading volume detected at the close of the session, which means it could experience further corrections.

- Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 670 CUP.

The persistent demand for foreign currency, amidst inflation, low wages, and the partial dollarization of the Cuban economy, keeps the pressure on a market that many Cubans turn to in order to protect their savings, travel, emigrate, import goods, or make certain purchases.
