The informal currency market in Cuba closes this Saturday with a positive day for the two main currencies. At 8:00 PM, Cuban local time, the U.S. dollar ends at 675 Cuban pesos (CUP) and the euro at 763 CUP, both above the values recorded on the previous day.
The MLC, with limited available data and indicative value, experiences a slight decline and is positioned around 467 pesos, according to compiled by CiberCuba.
The US dollar is trading at 675 Cuban pesos (CUP) as of the close of this Saturday. Compared to the previous day, this represents an increase of 2.5 pesos, equivalent to a rise of 0.4%.
In the past week, the green dollar has risen by 12 pesos from the 663 CUP it averaged seven days ago, representing a gain of 1.8%. Over the last month, the exchange rate has remained virtually at the same level, with an increase of just 2.5 pesos compared to the 673 CUP from 30 days ago, although this figure may reflect methodological adjustments to the index.
Exchange Rate Evolution
The dollar reaches this Saturday its highest point in the last 30 days, during which it has fluctuated between a low of 663 and the current peak of 675 CUP. It continues to set the tone in the informal market amidst a backdrop of structural currency shortages.
The euro closes at 763 Cuban pesos (CUP), representing an increase of five pesos compared to the 758 CUP from the previous day, an increase of 0.7%. Over the past week, the European currency has gained 12.5 pesos from the 750 CUP it was at seven days ago.
On the monthly horizon, the euro stands 22.5 pesos below the 785 CUP from 30 days ago, although this comparison should be taken with caution as it may reflect methodological adjustments of the index. In the last 30 days, the European currency has fluctuated between a low of 746 and a high of 788 CUP. It surpasses the dollar by 88 pesos, consolidating its dominant position in the Cuban parallel market.
The MLC is quoted at around 467 Cuban pesos (CUP), although this value should be taken as a guideline since the source records few data during this time frame.
According to data from the previous day, the exchange rate was 470 CUP, representing a decline of 3 pesos (-0.6%). In a weekly perspective, the MLC reflects a significant increase of 49.5 pesos from the 417 CUP recorded seven days ago (+11.9%), although the monthly comparison shows a decrease of 7.5 pesos compared to the 474 CUP from 30 days ago.
Without a physical presence, its use is limited to state-run businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.
- Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 675 CUP.
- Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 763 CUP.
- Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 467 CUP (indicative value, limited data).
The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III) is 636 CUP per dollar and 737 CUP per euro, remaining well below the values that prevail in everyday practice in the informal currency market.
Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and fails to meet the actual demand for foreign currency from the population.
The gap between the official and unofficial exchange rates has reached 39 pesos for the dollar and 26 pesos for the euro today. This reflects the ongoing shortage of foreign currency in the state banking system and the high demand for dollars and euros from the population, whether to emigrate, import goods, protect savings, or make purchases in the private sector.
In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state salaries, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, each fluctuation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans.
The Exchange Rate of CiberCuba is an index of the Cuban informal market created from the automated analysis of thousands of currency buy-and-sell posts in Telegram and Facebook groups.
The calculation eliminates atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each transaction based on its age, and consolidates a representative value that is updated several times a day.
