At 8:00 PM, Cuban local time, closes for the day this Friday, August 28, 2026, showing increases for both the dollar and the euro. The U.S. dollar rises to an average value of 673 Cuban pesos (CUP), while the euro climbs to 758 pesos. The MLC, with limited available data and only indicative value, is around 470 pesos. The rise of the two main currencies confirms the upward pressure affecting the informal market in recent days.

The United States dollar is quoted at 673 Cuban pesos (CUP) at the close of this trading day. This represents an increase of 2.5 pesos compared to the previous day, when it closed at 670 pesos. In weekly terms, the greenback has risen by 10 pesos from the 663 CUP of a week ago, which translates to a 1.5% increase. Compared to 30 days ago, the average value remains unchanged at the same 673 pesos, although this comparison may reflect methodological adjustments in the index rather than solely market movement. Over the past month, the dollar has fluctuated between a low of 663 and a high of 674 pesos in the informal market. It continues to set the tone for the informal market in a context of structural currency scarcity.

The euro is priced at 758 Cuban pesos (CUP) as of the close of this Friday. This represents an increase of 1.5 pesos compared to the previous session, when it was at 756 pesos. Over the last week, the common currency has risen by 9.5 pesos from 748 CUP seven days ago, an increase of 1.3%. In a 30-day outlook, the euro has decreased by 27.5 pesos from the 785 CUP recorded at that time, although this variation should be interpreted cautiously as it may partly reflect methodological adjustments to the index. The monthly range of the euro in the informal market has fluctuated between 746 and 788 pesos. It exceeds the dollar by 85 pesos, consolidating its dominant position in the Cuban parallel market.

The MLC closes at around 470 Cuban pesos (CUP) on average, although this figure should be taken as indicative since the closing range registers few data for this currency. Compared to the previous day, it has increased by 1 peso from the 469 pesos of the prior session. In the past week, the MLC has climbed 20 pesos from the 450 CUP recorded seven days ago, a rise of 4.4%. Compared to 30 days ago, it has slightly decreased by 2.5 pesos from the 472 CUP, a variation that might also be influenced by methodological adjustments. Without physical existence, its use is limited to state-run stores that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.

Exchange Rate Evolution

  • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 673 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 758 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 470 CUP (indicative value).

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III) is set at 634 CUP per dollar and 739 CUP per euro, which remains well below the values that govern daily transactions in the informal currency market.

Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and does not meet the real demand for foreign currency from the population. The gap between the official and informal rates has reached this Friday 39 pesos for the dollar and 19 pesos for the euro.

In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state wages, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every fluctuation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans. The simultaneous rise of the dollar and the euro at the close of this day reinforces the upward trend that has been observed throughout the week and further erodes the purchasing power of the Cuban peso.

The Exchange Rate from CiberCuba is an index of the Cuban informal market created from the automated analysis of thousands of currency buying and selling posts in Telegram and Facebook groups. The calculation disregards atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each transaction according to its age, and consolidates a representative value that is updated several times a day.
