A large deployment of law enforcement took over the gated community of Aquabella in northwest Hialeah for several hours on Tuesday afternoon after authorities received reports of gunfire in the area, according to Telemundo 51 and other local Miami media.
The Hialeah Police confirmed that multiple individuals were detained—although the exact number has not been disclosed—and that two suspicious vehicles were located within the neighborhood, situated at 13000 Northwest 97th Avenue.
The investigation remained active for several hours and, preliminarily, authorities indicated that no injured individuals were found.
A fight that ended in gunfire
According to NBC, it all started with a fistfight between two groups of young people in the vicinity of the community.
“Two groups of young people reportedly got into a fistfight, and investigators tell me that at some point, they supposedly fired two shots,” explained reporter Gabrielle Arzola from Local 10, who was at the scene.
When the agents arrived at the scene, several groups dispersed into the interior of the residential complex, triggering a large-scale operation to locate any potential individuals involved.
Forty units in a single corner
The scale of the deployment was remarkable. A reporter covering the operation on-site claimed to have counted around 40 law enforcement units on a single corner, not including the dozens operating within the residential complex.
In addition to the Hialeah Police, the Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office also responded to the scene.
The agents established a security perimeter, deployed canine units, and conducted searches for possible suspects related to the incident.
Videos captured with cell phones showed the moment when officers, with their weapons drawn, subdued two individuals. One of the subjects threw himself to the ground while the police pointed their guns at him, while another was seen lying on the pavement from a different angle.
Both were taken into custody minutes later.
Despite the detentions, no arrests had been formally made up to that point. According to the information released from the scene, two individuals had been apprehended, but no official announcements regarding any arrests had been made yet.
School on lockdown and residents stranded
As a precautionary measure, the Miami-Dade County Public Schools ordered a temporary security lockdown at West Lakes Preparatory Academy, the campus located near Aquabella, according to a report by CBS Miami.
Several parents waited anxiously in the vicinity until they were finally allowed to pick up their children.
The situation also affected dozens of residents who, upon returning home after the workday, found the access completely blocked. The waits lasted over two hours.
"All the entrances are closed... we have been waiting here for more than two hours," said a resident, as reported by Telemundo 51.
Another person waiting at the entrances expressed their frustration: "I have an hour and a half, and nothing... it’s not moving."
María Franco, a resident of Aquabella, summed up the collective frustration: "After a long day of work, having to wait two hours in line to get home is too much."
Residents were authorized to return to their homes just before 6:00 p.m.
Active investigation and no confirmed injuries
Meanwhile, the investigators conducted interviews and gathered evidence at the scene to determine the level of involvement of each person involved.
A resident waiting at the entrances summed up what was circulating among the neighbors: "According to what they say, they are looking for the person responsible for all this within Aquabella."
Yaisel, another resident of the complex, expressed relief despite the scare: "I was scared for the people living around, for my family. I knew that the Hialeah police would handle it, so we feel safe."
The authorities continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and the possible involvement of the detained individuals. Preliminary reports indicated that no injuries had been confirmed.
