At 8:00 PM, local Cuban time, concludes the day on this Tuesday, September 1, 2026, with a relatively calm outlook for the dollar, a slight decline for the euro, and a more pronounced drop—although there is limited data— for the MLC. The three reference currencies in the Cuban parallel market end the day with divergent behaviors, in a session that sees no major fluctuations for the U.S. dollar but does show a downward adjustment for the other two.
The U.S. dollar is trading at 678 Cuban pesos (CUP) at the close of this trading day. It remains unchanged compared to the previous day, thus consolidating the same level it had at today’s opening. In the past week, however, the greenback has risen 10 pesos —a 1.5%— from the 668 CUP it was at seven days ago. On a monthly horizon, the current exchange rate is 5 pesos higher than it was 30 days ago, although this comparison should be taken with caution, as it may reflect methodological adjustments in the index in addition to the market movement itself. Over the last 30 days, the dollar has fluctuated between a low of 663 CUP and the current high of 678 CUP. It continues to set the tone of the informal market in a context of structural foreign currency shortages.
The euro closes at 768 Cuban pesos (CUP), marking a decrease of 1.5 pesos compared to the previous day, when it was at 769 CUP. Despite this slight decline, the European currency has gained 12.5 pesos over the past week — a 1.7% increase — compared to the 755 CUP from seven days ago. In the monthly balance, the euro has lost 20 pesos compared to 30 days ago, when it reached 788 CUP, although this fluctuation may be partly influenced by methodological adjustments of the index. The highest point in the last 30 days was precisely 788 CUP, while the lowest was 746 CUP. It surpasses the dollar by 90 pesos, reinforcing its dominant position in the Cuban parallel market.
The MLC closes at 462 Cuban pesos (CUP), although this value should be considered indicative given that the available data during this time frame is limited. Compared to the previous day, when it was at 479 CUP, it shows a decrease of 17.5 pesos, equivalent to a drop of 3.7%. In the last week, it has fallen by 10 pesos from 472 CUP a week ago. In the past month, the digital currency has fluctuated between a low of 408 CUP and a high of 529 CUP, reflecting notable volatility. Without physical existence, its use is limited to the state-run businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.
Exchange Rate Evolution
- Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 678 CUP.
- Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 768 CUP.
- Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 462 CUP (reference value, limited data).
The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), at 636 CUP per dollar and 739 CUP per euro, remains well below the values that prevail in everyday practice in the informal currency market.
Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible currency mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and fails to meet the actual demand for foreign currency from the population. In the past month, the official dollar has risen from 615 to 636 CUP, and the official euro from 707 to 739 CUP, a rising trend that, nevertheless, has not managed to close the gap with the parallel market.
In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state salaries, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every fluctuation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans. The difference of 42 pesos between the official dollar and the informal dollar —and 29 pesos in the case of the euro— illustrates the gap that separates the formal economy from the daily reality of most Cubans.
The Exchange Rate of CiberCuba is an index of the informal Cuban market, created through automated analysis of thousands of currency buy-and-sell posts in Telegram and Facebook groups. The calculation disregards atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each transaction based on its recency, and consolidates a representative value that is updated several times a day.
