A hug that was worth every day of waiting. The young Cuban Sheyla (@sheyla_ml) shared on TikTok a video of just 24 seconds that became much more than a personal post: the moment she embraced her mother at the airport in Cuba moved thousands of people within days.
The images show a mother and daughter embracing with a strength that speaks volumes, surrounded by luggage and knowing glances from those who witnessed the moment. The text overlay on the clip summarizes in a few words what no camera can fully capture: "Only God knows how much I longed for that hug."
In the background, "Madre," a song by El Chacal, plays—a song that seems written for the occasion: "Give her your love, never make her cry, because there is only one mother."
The video accumulated over 50,600 views and surpassed 3,100 likes in just a few days, but what truly overwhelmed social media were the comments. Hundreds of Cubans in the diaspora shared their own stories, their own waits, their own airports.
"If a mom cries from happiness, we all cry. Enjoy it, my love," wrote one user. Another confessed candidly, "Every time I watch these videos, I cry. I really wish I could have a hug from my mom."
There were those who recalled the exact sensation of returning: “There’s nothing that compares to the feeling when the plane is approaching Cuba and landing on the runway.” And someone summed it all up with a single phrase: “That embrace resets you.”
But not all the comments were purely joyful. One, particularly heartbreaking, came from someone who will no longer have that opportunity: "How much I would give for that hug, and, for reasons beyond my control, I can no longer. I took her away and she took her to heaven, and I cannot go. Only God knows. Hug her and enjoy your family, because when they're gone, there is a very large emptiness left."
This type of reunion has become a recurring phenomenon on social media during 2026. The massive Cuban emigration in recent years has left thousands of families separated for months or even years, and when one of their members manages to return to the island, the moment is usually recorded and shared, generating an emotional response that goes far beyond the original video.
The airport —that arrival area filled with nerves and suppressed tears— has become the quintessential symbolic setting for these reunions that touch the hearts of the entire Cuban community, both on the island and abroad.
And amidst all the comments, one person summed it all up with the simplicity of someone who is also waiting for their turn: "God willing, I'll be out through that door soon..."
