A 27-year-old substitute teacher was arrested this week after a loaded gun was found in her backpack at Westland Senior High School in Hialeah, according to reports from the local press.
The accused was identified as Chenelle Antonette Doctor, a resident of Hollywood, Florida, who was serving as a substitute teacher that day at the school, located at 4000 W. 18th Ave.
How did they find the weapon?
Everything began when a teacher found an unattended backpack in the school auditorium and checked it with the intention of locating some identification for its owner.
Instead of documents, the teacher found a 9 mm Walther pistol concealed in a black case.
The teacher immediately took the backpack to the principal's office, who notified the campus resource officer.
Upon inspecting the content, the agents confirmed that the weapon had a bullet in the chamber and a magazine inserted with seven live rounds, in addition to an extra empty magazine.
Within the wallet found in the same backpack was an identification document that linked the bag to Doctor.
The teacher's explanation
Once located on campus, Doctor was detained by the school resource officer.
According to the arrest report from the Miami-Dade School Police Department, cited by Local 10, the accused spontaneously told the officer that she had forgotten to take the gun out of her backpack that morning.
The doctor was working that day as an employee of Kelly Services, the contracting company that provides substitute teachers to schools in Miami-Dade County.
The hiring requirements for Kelly Education —a division of Kelly Services— include a high school diploma, being at least 19 years old for secondary schools, and passing a criminal background check, but do not require a college degree or previous experience in education.
Charges and appearance before the judge
Doctor faces a charge of possession of a firearm on school property, a third-degree felony under Florida Statute 790.115.
That regulation explicitly prohibits weapons in primary and secondary schools, their administrative buildings, and school sporting events, even for those who possess a carry license.
It is worth noting that Florida allows carrying concealed weapons without a permit since July 1, 2023, but the law maintains an explicit prohibition within school premises.
This Wednesday, Doctor appeared before a judge who imposed pre-trial supervision with an alternative bail of $2,500 and ordered her to stay away from the school.
By Thursday morning, she remained detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK).
The context of school security in Miami-Dade
The incident rekindles concerns about safety in the county's schools, a particularly sensitive issue in South Florida.
In August, a threat posted on Instagram against the Hialeah campus of Miami-Dade College led to the arrest of a student, with bail set at $5,000.
After the Parkland tragedy in 2018, Florida strengthened its school safety framework and incorporated school resource officers into campuses; a new law approved in 2026 extended the armed guardians program to public higher education institutions.
Westland Senior High School, founded in 2007 to relieve the overcrowding of other high schools in Hialeah, serves approximately 1,191 students in grades 9 through 12, highlighting the seriousness of a loaded weapon being left unattended in its auditorium.
