A Cuban content creator identified as Karen Hernández (@elixir_karen) posted a video on Instagram urging Cubans residing in Spain to emigrate again, warning that the Iberian country is moving towards communism and that the supposed quality of life it offers is nothing more than a myth.
"Look, without trying to offend, if you are Cuban and you’re watching me and you’re in Spain, stay and listen to me. If you’re thinking about or afraid of emigrating again and you’re in Spain, emigrate!" Karen starts off in the clip, before delivering her political diagnosis: "Spain is communist and very soon it will become even more communist and, unless they get Sánchez out, it will gradually head towards bankruptcy."
The Cuban, who claims to have already experienced that process on the island and does not want to go through it again, dismantles what she calls the "myth" of European quality of life.
"For me, quality of life means having a gym in my house, being able to live comfortably, not living in a small apartment like this, paying a thousand euros while earning twelve hundred," he argues.
Regarding public healthcare, one of the most frequently cited arguments in favor of Spain, Karen is equally blunt: "They're charging you for it through taxes, folks, and an appointment takes nine months."
His closing message leaves no room for doubt: "Don't be fooled by the supposed quality of life, and if you are in Spain and you’re Cuban, emigrate again so that you don't get caught in the Armageddon again and it becomes a second Cuba."
The video sparked a debate among its followers. Several agreed with the sentiment: “Say it louder, Europe is not easy. Just like that, no job. A room costs 500 € plus additional expenses,” they wrote. Another commenter mentioned choosing the Dominican Republic: “Here I have quality of life and a lot of freedom to invest and move forward. Only going to Spain for vacation.”
But criticism also came. A Cuban still living on the island responded with an extensive comment in which, although she acknowledged part of his arguments, she urged him to be measured: "There are millions of us Cubans on the island seeking a way out, and one of the few hopes left to us is to emigrate to Spain. You don’t realize whose wings and hopes you are clipping with the way you express yourself about this."
It is not the first time that Karen Hernández has issued such warnings. In September 2025, she already described it as "madness" to emigrate from the United States to Spain, pointing out that salaries "do not exceed 1,500 euros," and a month later, she listed three reasons to discourage the move: high taxes when purchasing property, limited legal protection for homeowners, and a cost of living that exceeds typical income.
The debate over whether Spain is a good destination for Cubans has been dividing the diaspora for years, and Karen Hernández's video shows that the discussion is far from over.
