A man identified by local media as a Cuban citizen was accused this Thursday of an alleged attempted robbery at a Soriana supermarket in Cancún, where he was involved in a tense moment with customers who tried to prevent him from escaping.
The incident occurred at the Soriana Rancho Viejo store, located on Niños Héroes Avenue in Cancún, Quintana Roo, and was captured in a video shared on social media by local media.
According to information released by local media along with the recording, the man reportedly attempted to hit some of the people who confronted him while trying to leave the location.
The video shows a struggle and several moments of tension as customers try to restrain the man in the vicinity of the establishment.
So far, there is no official information confirming whether he was arrested, what product he may have attempted to steal, or if Soriana filed a complaint with the Attorney General's Office of Quintana Roo.
The incident occurs just a few days after another similar case in Cancun. On August 29, a Cuban citizen identified as Erwin'l B. G., 36 years old, was accused of attempting to steal two items from a Zara store located in Plaza La Isla, in the hotel zone.
The items were valued at approximately 1,100 Mexican pesos. On that occasion, the establishment decided not to file a criminal complaint, and the man ended up paying for the items.
These incidents occur in a particularly sensitive context for the Cuban community settled in Cancun, where, in recent months, migrant support organizations have warned about an increase in expressions of rejection and discrimination against citizens from the island.
Tensions escalated in May after Rigoberto «N» assaulted a Mexican citizen in Supermanzana 23. The spread of the video prompted around 200 people to gather outside his home, where rocks and bottles were thrown, necessitating the intervention of security forces.
After that episode, local organizations reported insults, difficulties in obtaining employment and housing, and other forms of rejection towards Cubans who had nothing to do with the incident. The authorities of Quintana Roo urged to avoid retaliation and called for not collectively blaming a community for the individual actions of some of its members.
