Monseñor Domingo Oropesa Lorente, Bishop of Cienfuegos, remains in intensive care after undergoing surgery for a severe kidney condition that caused a urinary tract obstruction; however, his condition is stable and he is responding favorably to treatment.
The Diocese of Cienfuegos reported this Thursday that the prelate remains under medical care in the Multi-purpose ICU of the Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima General University Hospital.
The second statement regarding his health condition specified that Oropesa was admitted due to an infected hydronephrosis, a situation that necessitated intervention in the operating room.
During the procedure, the doctors inserted an internal-external catheter to clear the urinary tract and successfully removed the stone that was causing the obstruction.
"At this time, our Bishop is stable and responding well to antibiotic treatment," stated the Diocese.
The religious institution added that his blood pressure remains stable and under control, and that, up to the time of the medical report, he had not experienced a fever again.
Oropesa's hospitalization had been announced a day earlier by the Diocese itself.
The first statement explained that the bishop was admitted to the ICU on Wednesday afternoon due to a "severe kidney condition" and would need to remain hospitalized for the next few days under medical care and monitoring.
The information had been communicated by Father Manel Homar Toboso, the vicar general of the Diocese.
After the details of the intervention became known, the institution expressed gratitude for the work of the medical and nursing staff responsible for caring for the clergyman, as well as for the expressions of concern and prayers received from various communities.
Domingo Oropesa Lorente was born on October 10, 1950, in Alcázar de San Juan, Ciudad Real, Spain, and arrived in Cuba as a missionary priest in 1999.
Pope Benedict XVI appointed him bishop of Cienfuegos on July 9, 2007, and he was ordained bishop and took possession of the diocese on September 15 of that year.
The concern for his health arises in a year also marked by several losses within the Cuban Catholic episcopate.
In April, Monsignor Jorge Enrique Serpa Pérez, emeritus bishop of Pinar del Río, passed away at the age of 84. His journey was characterized by more than three decades of exile and his subsequent pastoral work in Cuba.
Two months later, in June, Monsignor Silvano Pedroso Montalvo, bishop of Guantánamo-Baracoa, passed away at the age of 73 after suffering from an oncological illness.
