The Chief of Mission of the United States in Cuba, Mike Hammer, met with the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to update him on the current situation on the island and Washington's efforts to channel 100 million dollars in humanitarian aid.
The United States Embassy in Cuba informed on Monday about the meeting and noted that Washington is working to deliver aid through Caritas and other organizations deemed trustworthy.
"The head of Mission Mike Hammer met with Secretary Rubio to inform him about the current situation in Cuba and our efforts to deliver 100 million dollars in humanitarian assistance through Caritas and other reliable organizations," stated the diplomatic representation.
During the meeting, it was also addressed, according to the Embassy, the support of the United States "for the aspirations of the Cuban people to live in freedom and with dignity", making Washington's stance on the political future of the island clear.
The post was accompanied by the flags of the United States and Cuba and the tag #WithCubanPeopleStanding, a slogan that has characterized much of Hammer's mission on the island, marked by meetings with citizens, activists, religious leaders, and beneficiaries of assistance programs.
The offer of 100 million dollars was publicly revealed by Marco Rubio on May 8th.
The Secretary of State then announced that Washington had offered that amount in humanitarian assistance for the Cuban people and stated that the Government of Havana had not accepted its distribution up to that moment.
Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez then denied that Havana had received the proposal and described it as a "tale" and a "100 million dollar lie."
