Labor Day is celebrated on Monday, September 7th, across the United States, and South Florida is no exception: the day features public sector closures alongside widespread openings in retail, with some exceptions.
The federal holiday marks the unofficial end of summer and is associated with travel, family gatherings, and commercial offers in what is popularly called a "long weekend." However, it also involves significant adjustments in services, transportation, and schedules that are important to know when making plans.
What stores and businesses will be open?
The vast majority of supermarkets and stores will open as usual, including Walmart, Target, Publix, Sedano's, Presidente Supermarket, Winn-Dixie, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy, Macy's, Kohl's, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Ross, CVS, and Walgreens, among others.
Some establishments will operate on reduced hours: Aldi will close at 6:00 PM, Sam's Club will also close at 6:00 PM, and Hobby Lobby will be open from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.
The main shopping centers in the area will open their doors. Dolphin Mall will operate from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm, while Aventura Mall will host a special edition of its market. Dadeland Mall, The Falls, and Brickell City Centre are also looking forward to welcoming shoppers.
Among the major retail chains, Costco is the most notable exception: it will remain closed.
What will be closed?
In Miami-Dade, the official information states that government offices will not open on Monday: courts, public libraries, the Pet Adoption and Protection Center, and licensing and permitting departments will remain closed until Tuesday.
"Labor Day, celebrated annually on the first Monday in September, recognizes the numerous contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the United States," the statement expresses.
Public libraries will not open their doors. However, the county clarified that digital services such as e-books, audiobooks, and online databases will be available. "Our online library is always open at www.mdpls.org and through our MDPLS mobile app," the information states.
Miami-Dade Public Schools will not have classes either; academic activities will resume on Tuesday, the 8th.
The banks -Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo, Citi, Truist, and others- will be closed due to the Federal Reserve holiday, although ATMs, mobile apps, and online banking will remain operational. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will also be inactive.
The United States Postal Service (USPS) will not conduct pickups or deliver regular mail; however, Priority Mail Express will operate on federal holidays. FedEx and UPS will also not make regular pickups or deliveries, although some locations may open with modified hours.
Transport, beaches, and attractions
Public transportation will operate on a reduced schedule: Metrorail and Metromover will run on their weekend service, while Metrobus and MetroConnect will follow a Sunday schedule. The City of Miami trolleys will operate on a holiday schedule, generally from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
The offices of the Special Transportation Service (STS) will remain closed, but users can call 305-871-1111 to book or cancel a trip.
The trash collection and recycling in Miami-Dade will continue as usual, although residents of Hialeah, Doral, Miami Beach, Coral Gables, and Homestead should check with their local government.
The beaches, parks, and golf courses in Miami-Dade will be open. Zoo Miami will offer tickets for $15 purchased online, and Deering Estate will have general admission for $8 throughout the weekend.
Miami International Airport will operate normally, although a high volume of travelers is expected.
Authorities recommend arriving early at Crandon Park, Haulover Beach, Matheson Hammock, South Pointe Park, and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, where parking lots could fill up quickly.
