opens this Monday, September 7, with a mixed performance of the three reference currencies.
At 10:00 a.m. (Cuban local time), the U.S. dollar opens unchanged from the previous day, averaging 683 Cuban pesos; while the euro sees a slight increase of one peso to 776 CUP.
The Freely Convertible Currency (MLC), for its part, opens lower—around 422 CUP—although this figure should be considered as indicative due to the low volume of operations that supports it.
Summary of informal market rates
- Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 683 CUP.
- Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 776 CUP.
- Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 422 CUP (reference value, limited data).
The dollar is stable but shows an upward trend this week
The US dollar is quoted at 683 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market, the same value it recorded in the previous trading day.
Exchange Rate Evolution
It remains unchanged compared to yesterday, although the weekly and monthly outlook shows an underlying upward trend: seven days ago, the exchange rate was 678 pesos, which represents an increase of five pesos in the last week (+0.7%).
On the monthly horizon, the dollar has gained 10 pesos compared to the 673 CUP of 30 days ago, although it's worth noting that this comparison may partially reflect methodological adjustments in the index and not solely market movement.
In the last 30 days, the dollar has fluctuated between a low of 663 and a high of 683 pesos in the informal market.
The euro, with a slight uptick at the opening
The euro is trading at 776 Cuban pesos (CUP), which represents an increase of one peso compared to the previous day, when it closed at 775 CUP.
The European currency has recorded a notable increase in the weekly comparison: seven days ago, it was at 765 pesos, which is 11 pesos less than today (+1.4%).
In the next 30 days, the euro is six pesos below the 782 CUP it was at a month ago, although this difference may partly be due to methodological adjustments in the index.
In the last month, the European currency has fluctuated between a low of 746 and a high of 783 pesos.
The European currency exceeds the dollar by 93 pesos, consolidating its dominant position in the Cuban parallel market.
The MLC is on the decline and has limited data
The MLC is priced around 422 Cuban pesos (CUP), according to preliminary opening data. Given the low volume of transactions recorded during this time frame, the value should be interpreted with caution.
Regarding the previous session, the MLC has decreased by 22 pesos (-5%), and the trend is clearly downward in the short term: a week ago it was at 464 pesos, which implies a drop of 42 pesos over the week (-9.1%).
In the last month, it has fallen from 449 to 422 pesos, although this variation may also be influenced by methodological adjustments.
In the last 30 days, it has fluctuated between a low of 408 and a high of 529 pesos.
Without a physical existence, its use is limited to state-owned businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.
The gap between the informal market and the official rate
The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), at 640 CUP per dollar and 744 CUP per euro, remains significantly below the rates that govern daily transactions in the informal currency market.
The difference is 43 pesos in the case of the dollar and 32 pesos in the case of the euro.
Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and fails to meet the actual demand for foreign currency from the population.
It is important to note that the official exchange rate of the dollar has risen from 621 CUP in early August to the current 640 CUP, indicating a sustained depreciation of the peso even in the official market.
The gap between the official and informal exchange rates reflects the ongoing shortage of foreign currency in the state banking system and the high demand for dollars and euros among the population, whether for emigration, importing goods, protecting savings, or making purchases in the private sector.
