Ford Motor Company announced the recall of 148,663 units of the Ford Mustang from model years 2024, 2025, and 2026 due to a defect in the wiring system that may cause a sudden loss of traction power, increasing the risk of an accident.
The official notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states: "The ground connections for the wiring harness in the engine compartment may fracture, which could lead to a loss of power or a failure in the windshield washer system, headlights, air conditioning, or engine cooling fan. Therefore, these vehicles do not comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) numbers 108, 'Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment,' and 104, 'Washer and wiper systems'."
What exactly is the issue?
The technical issue lies with the eyelet terminals to ground of the wiring harness, which may fracture due to fatigue under vibration. According to the technical dossier of the case, the cause is related to the intrusion of heat-shrink adhesive that bends the eyelet and shortens its lifespan. The campaign carries the official number 26V547000 in the NHTSA registry and Ford's internal code 26C40.
All affected vehicles belong to the seventh generation of the Mustang, known as S650, which debuted as the 2024 model and includes the EcoBoost, GT, and Dark Horse variants. They were assembled at the Flat Rock, Michigan plant, between September 2022 and June 2026.
Ford estimates that approximately 1% of the vehicles involved in the recall actually have the defect. At the time of the announcement, the company was not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.
What should property owners do?
The interim notification letters to the owners were sent around August 31. However, the final solution will not be widely available at dealerships until around March 2027, at which time the final remedy letters will also be distributed.
Meanwhile, owners can check via the VIN if their Mustang is included in the recall and contact their Ford dealer for updated information. The free replacement of the ground terminals will take place when the solution is available.
To check if a specific vehicle is included in the recall, simply enter the 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN) on the official NHTSA portal or on the Ford support site. Those with additional questions can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
This is not Ford's first recall of the year. In April 2026, the company had already called back thousands of vehicles from the Expedition, Lincoln, and F-Series lines due to wiper blade issues.
In September 2025, Ford had recalled nearly 1.5 million vehicles due to a defective rear camera.
