Amanda María Abreus Pérez, a 14-year-old adolescent residing in the rural community of Los Ángeles, in the Camagüey municipality of Vertientes, passed away in the early hours of this Tuesday after experiencing a health emergency while she was a student at the Máximo Gómez Báez Vocational Pre-University Institute of Exact Sciences (IPVCE), where she was in the tenth grade.

The first reports on what happened were shared by the independent journalist José Luis Tan Estrada on Facebook, who cited sources indicating that the teenager had experienced difficulties breathing and that the emergency occurred during one of the blackouts affecting the area.

According to those testimonies, Amanda was taken to the school's infirmary and later to a hospital in the city of Camagüey, where she reportedly arrived without vital signs.

However, the exact circumstances of the death and its cause have not been officially confirmed, while relatives of the teenager have publicly questioned some of the versions spread on social media.

A woman identified as Yadanis Abreu Rodríguez, who presented herself as a relative of Amanda, requested in the same post by Tan Estrada that the family's mourning be respected and warned that there were rumors being circulated that "are not entirely true."

"It is fine to publish things about the situation in the country, but not about the life and passing of my daughter because her family is currently going through a very difficult time," she wrote.

Another woman, Odalis Abreu, also identified herself as a relative and criticized the dissemination of versions about what happened while the family was still in the early hours of the tragedy. "We, the family members, suffer from a pain that will last forever," she expressed, while questioning the accuracy of some of the published information.

For that reason, it is not confirmed that an asthma crisis, a fall from a bunk bed, lack of oxygen, or other circumstances mentioned on social media caused the death of the teenager.

The passing has caused a deep shock in Vertientes and among former students of the Vocational school, with numerous messages of condolence directed to her parents, family, teachers, and classmates. Some users who seemed to know the adolescent personally remembered her fondly. “We will always remember you, Amandita,” wrote one internet user.

At the same time, the tragedy sparked a debate about the deterioration of conditions at a facility that, decades ago, had significant healthcare services for its resident students.

As of the time of this report, neither the administration of IPVCE Máximo Gómez Báez nor the Provincial Education Directorate of Camagüey had publicly provided a detailed explanation regarding what transpired, leaving the cause of Amanda's death, the sequence of the emergency, and the medical assistance she received before being transferred to the hospital unclear.
