At 10:00 a.m. local time in Havana, opens this Friday, September 11, showing mixed behavior among its main currencies.
The U.S. dollar is trading at 688 Cuban pesos (CUP) on the black market, with a buying rate of 685 CUP and a selling rate of 690 CUP. It remains unchanged compared to the previous day, although over the past week it has increased by 5 pesos (+0.7%) from the 683 CUP average recorded seven days ago.
In the monthly analysis, the exchange rate exceeds the figure from 30 days ago by 22.5 pesos, when it was around 665 CUP, although this comparison may partly reflect adjustments in the index's methodology. Over the last 30 days, the dollar has fluctuated between a low of 663 CUP and the current high of 688 CUP. It marks the pulse of the informal market in a context of currency scarcity.
The euro rises in value and stands at 785 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a buying price of 780 CUP and a selling price of 789 CUP. This represents an increase of 3.5 pesos compared to the previous day, when it was quoted at 781 CUP.
Exchange Rate Evolution
In weekly terms, the European currency has gained 11 pesos (+1.4%) compared to 774 CUP seven days ago. Today's value matches the highest recorded in the last 30 days, during which the euro has fluctuated between a low of 746 CUP and the current level. It exceeds the dollar by 97 pesos, consolidating its dominant position in the Cuban parallel market.
The MLC is around 478 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a purchase rate of 459 CUP and a selling rate of 492 CUP. However, the available data in this range is scarce, so this value should be considered as a guideline.
Regarding the previous session, the figure represents an increase of 12 pesos. In the last month, the MLC has fluctuated between a minimum of 408 CUP and a maximum of 529 CUP. Without physical existence, its use is limited to state-run stores that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.
Summary of rates in the informal market
- Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 688 CUP.
- Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 785 CUP.
- Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 478 CUP (indicative value, few data).
The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III) is 651 CUP per dollar and 757 CUP per euro, remaining significantly lower than the values that are in effect in daily practice in the informal currency market. The gap between the two markets amounts to 37 pesos in the case of the dollar and 28 pesos in the case of the euro.
Segment III was presented as a more flexible exchange mechanism, but its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and fails to meet the actual demand for foreign currency from the population.
In the past month, the official exchange rate for the dollar has risen from 624 to 651 CUP, and for the euro, from 720 to 757 CUP, an adjustment that has not managed to close the gap with the parallel market.
In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state salaries, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every fluctuation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans. Today's modest increase in the euro adds to a upward trend that has accumulated nearly 25 pesos over the past month.
The CiberCuba Exchange Rate is an index of the informal Cuban market created through the automated analysis of thousands of currency trading posts in Telegram and Facebook groups.
The calculation filters out atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each transaction according to its age, and consolidates a representative value that is updated several times a day.
