The Havana Bay Tunnel will have partial closures for two consecutive days due to maintenance and cleaning work, so authorities advised drivers to plan alternative routes.
The Ministry of Transportation of Cuba announced this Sunday that the restrictions will begin on Monday, September 14, and will also extend to Tuesday, September 15, always between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
On Monday, the Habana-Cabaña direction will be closed, while the opposite direction, Cabaña-Habana, will remain open for regular vehicle circulation.
One day later, on Tuesday, the situation will reverse: the Cabaña-Habana direction will be closed while the Habana-Cabaña direction will remain open.
The Provincial Road Safety Commission recommended that those who need to cross the tunnel do so before 9:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m.
During closing hours, the designated alternatives are Vía Blanca, Anillo del Puerto, and Avenida del Puerto.
The authorities also urged drivers to reduce their speed in the area, follow the instructions of traffic officers, and check the technical condition of their vehicles in advance to prevent malfunctions within the tunnel.
Although unrelated, the maintenance comes just a few days after a minibus got stuck at the exit of the Bay Tunnel, an incident that went viral on social media due to the unusual nature of the event.
Similarly, the infrastructure has also been central to other recent incidents related to transportation challenges in the city.
In June, dozens of Havana residents ended up crossing the tunnel on foot after waiting for hours for transportation.
Months earlier, in March, images of the tunnel nearly empty reflected the impact of the fuel shortage on mobility in Havana.
Moreover, this is not the first time that maintenance restrictions have been implemented. In May 2025, the authorities also announced partial closures at the facility to carry out conservation work.
