The Malecón of Havana is a broad promenade, avenue, and seawall that stretches for 8 km along the coast of Havana, Cuba. It runs from the entrance of the Port of Havana in Old Havana, along the northern parts of the municipalities Centro Habana and Plaza de la Revolución (through Vedado), ending at the mouth of the Almendares River, where the Miramar neighborhood in the municipality of Playa begins.
The construction of the Havana Malecon began in 1901, during the American occupation. The main objective of its construction was to protect Havana from the encroachments of the sea caused by north winds.
Subsequent Cuban governments continued the expansion of the first section of the Malecón. In 1923, it reached the mouth of the Almendares River.
