The informal currency market in Cuba opened this Monday with increases for the three main references: the dollar regained ground, the euro jumped again, and the MLC (Freely Convertible Currency) recorded the strongest movement of the day.
According to , the U.S. dollar was quoted at 694 Cuban pesos (CUP), compared to 693 CUP from the previous day.
The U.S. dollar has also remained steady over the past week: seven days ago it was at 683 CUP. In just a month, it has risen from 664 CUP to the current 694 CUP, which also represents its highest level in the last 30 days.
The euro opened at 793 CUP, five pesos above the 788 CUP from Sunday. The European currency remains the most expensive in the informal market and is now ahead of the dollar by 99 pesos.
Exchange Rate Evolution
A week ago, the euro was at 775 CUP, so it has gained 18 pesos during that period. Its exchange rate this Monday should be considered as indicative, as there were still few data available during the early hours of the trading day.
The most notable movement was that of the MLC, which rose to about 482 CUP, up from the 464 CUP recorded the previous day.
They are 18 pesos more in just one day and nearly 60 pesos above its value from a week ago.

While the exchange rates continue to rise on the street, the official rates of the Central Bank of Cuba for Segment III remain at 655 CUP per dollar and 760 CUP per euro.
This leaves the unofficial dollar 39 pesos above the official rate and the euro with a difference of 33 pesos, another indication of the ongoing pressure faced by the Cuban peso amid a shortage of foreign currency, low wages, and the general increase in the cost of living.
