A construction crane collapsed this Monday on Brickell Bay Drive in Miami, an incident that left four people injured and led to a complex rescue operation that forced the closure of several roads in one of the city's busiest corridors.
Telemundo 51 reported that the accident occurred at the intersection of Brickell Bay Drive with SE 12th and SE 13th Streets in the southeast, right in the middle of an active construction area.
Miami-Dade Firefighters confirmed that four people were transported to a hospital following a rescue operation described as complicated. At the time of the initial reports, authorities had not provided updates on the condition of any of the injured.
The images captured at the site showed the crane that collapsed onto a white BMW vehicle that was passing through the area at the time of the collapse. The car was trapped under the crane's arm and caught fire. Firefighters extinguished the blaze during the same rescue operation.
Traffic alert in Brickell
The Miami Police closed Brickell Bay Drive between SE 12th Street and SE 13th Street while emergency teams worked at the scene. Authorities advised drivers to "avoid the area, seek alternative routes, and expect delays."
They also pointed out Brickell Avenue as the main alternate route. "Please exercise caution and follow the instructions of the officials on site," they warned.
The investigation of the incident is being handled by the Miami-Dade Fire Department and the Miami Police.
On August 7, a crane being assembled fell onto the terrace of the pool at the One Plaza West Brickell condominium, leaving no injuries. This case is under investigation by the Miami Building Department and OSHA.
At the end of April, an 800-ton crane from Sims Crane & Equipment collapsed in Hialeah while working for Florida Power & Light; an incident that also resulted in no casualties.
