A construction crane collapsed this Monday on Brickell Bay Drive in Miami, leaving four people injured and triggering a complex rescue operation that forced the closure of several roads in one of the city's busiest corridors.
Telemundo 51 reported that the accident occurred at the intersection of Brickell Bay Drive with SE 12th and SE 13th Streets in the southeast, in a fully active construction zone.
The Miami-Dade Firefighters confirmed that four people were transported to a hospital following a rescue operation described as complicated. At the time of the initial reports, authorities had not provided information regarding the health status of any of the injured individuals.
The images captured at the scene showed the crane that had fallen on a white BMW vehicle that was passing through the area at the time of the collapse. The car was trapped under the crane's arm and caught fire. The firefighters extinguished the blaze during the same rescue operation.
Traffic alert in Brickell
The Miami Police closed Brickell Bay Drive between SE 12th Street and SE 13th Street while emergency teams worked at the scene. Authorities advised drivers to "avoid the area, seek alternative routes, and expect delays."
They also identified Brickell Avenue as the main alternate route. "Please exercise caution and follow the instructions of the officials on-site," they warned.
The investigation of the incident is being handled by the Miami-Dade Fire Department and the Miami Police.
On August 8th, a crane that was being assembled collapsed onto the pool terrace of the One Plaza West Brickell condominium, with no injuries reported. This incident is under investigation by the Miami Department of Buildings and OSHA.
At the end of April, an 800-ton crane from Sims Crane & Equipment collapsed in Hialeah while working for Florida Power & Light, also without casualties.
