A Cuban who returned to the island took the opportunity during his visit to bring flowers to the grave of his deceased parents, and the moment —captured in a video posted on TikTok by the user @thevip13_ (VIP_MARCOS_VIP) last Friday— moved thousands of people both inside and outside the island.
In the images, the protagonist speaks directly to his parents with words that encapsulate the weight of distance and loss: "I came to feel good and I'm going to do it for you, Dad. For you, Mom. You prepared me for life."
The video, just over three minutes long, is accompanied by a sentimental song whose lyrics speak of the pain of absence: "You are the sadness of my eyes, crying silently for your love / I look in the mirror and see on my face the time I have suffered for your farewell."
The description that the user wrote when posting the clip captures the spirit of the gesture: "Blessings to heaven for dad and mom."
The real name of the protagonist and the Cuban province where the visited cemetery is located are not known.
The video is part of a trend that has strongly emerged on TikTok in recent years: Cubans who have emigrated returning to the island and documenting highly emotional moments, from reunions with family to tributes to deceased loved ones.
In May, a Cuban woman brought flowers to her mother’s grave in a cemetery on the island and shared the message: “If I can never hug you again, look for me among the dead, there I will be, mom.”
A few days before this new video, another Cuban said goodbye to his mother by scattering her ashes in a clip that surpassed 83,000 views and generated hundreds of supportive comments.
In July, the influencer known as "Bota Compota" (Anthony Eduardo Pi Vila) returned to Cuba after the death of his father and published a video that garnered more than 128,000 views.
This trend reflects a reality that shapes the lives of the Cuban diaspora: the long periods of family separation caused by economic difficulties, travel costs, and the restrictions imposed by the dictatorship, which keep many away from their loved ones for years.
Posthumous tribute videos—bringing flowers to a grave, speaking at a tombstone, scattering ashes—have resonated particularly within the Cuban community, which sees in these images the shared pain of growing up and aging far from home.
The video from @thevip13_ had accumulated almost 29,000 views and nearly a thousand reactions at the time of its publication, along with dozens of comments from Cubans who identified with the gesture.
