At 10:00 a.m., local time, marks a significant milestone this Thursday, September 17, 2026: the US dollar reaches 700 Cuban pesos. The euro follows the upward trend, while the MLC shows a decline.
The dollar hits 700 pesos
The US dollar is trading this Thursday at 700 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market, its highest value in the last 30 days. This represents an increase of 2.00 pesos compared to the previous day, when it was exchanged at 698 CUP.
The upward trend is even more pronounced in the weekly balance: a week ago, the dollar was trading at 688 pesos, which represents an increase of 12 pesos in one week, equivalent to a rise of 1.8%.
Compared to 30 days ago, when the exchange rate was 663 CUP, the US dollar has gained 37 pesos. However, it is important to note that part of this variation may reflect adjustments in the methodology of the index and not solely market movement.
Exchange Rate Evolution
The euro rises to 796 pesos
The euro is trading this Thursday at 796 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a buying rate of 793 CUP and a selling rate of 800 CUP. This represents an increase of one peso compared to the previous session, when it was negotiated at 795 CUP.
On a weekly basis, the European currency has risen by 15 pesos from 781 CUP a week ago. Thirty days ago, the euro was exchanged at 758 CUP; however, like in the case of the dollar, this comparison should be interpreted cautiously as it may include methodological adjustments.
The euro surpasses the dollar by 97 pesos, consolidating its position as the most expensive currency in the Cuban parallel market.
MLC on the decline with indicative data
The MLC appears this Thursday at 448 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a purchase rate of 443 CUP and a selling rate of 463 CUP. This value represents a decrease of 98 pesos compared to the previous day.
However, it is essential to treat this figure as indicative because the volume of transactions during this time frame is low, which diminishes the representativeness of the data.
Summary of exchange rates
- Exchange rate of the dollar (USD) to CUP: 700 CUP.
- Exchange rate of the euro (EUR) to CUP: 796 CUP.
- Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 448 CUP (indicative value, limited data).
Maxima and minima in the last 30 days
The milestone today is particularly significant when compared to the records of the past month. The dollar has fluctuated between a minimum of 663 CUP and a maximum of 700 CUP as of this Thursday, meaning the U.S. currency has reached its highest peak during this period. The euro, on the other hand, has ranged between 746 and the current 797 CUP, also at its highest level in 30 days. The MLC, however, has shown greater volatility, with a range from 408 to 542 CUP during the same timeframe.
The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III) is 664 CUP per dollar and 766 CUP per euro, remaining well below the values that prevail in everyday practice in the informal currency market.
Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and fails to meet the real demand for foreign currency among the population. The gap between both markets currently stands at 36 pesos for the dollar and 31 pesos for the euro.
The gap between the official and informal exchange rates reflects the ongoing shortage of foreign currency in the state banking system and the high demand for dollars and euros from the population, whether for emigrating, importing goods, protecting savings, or making purchases in the private sector.
In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state salaries, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every fluctuation in the informal market directly affects internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans. That the dollar has reached 700 pesos in the informal market —up from the 631 CUP that the official rate was just a month ago— illustrates the rapid decline in the purchasing power of the Cuban peso.
The Exchange Rate of CiberCuba is an index of the Cuban informal market developed from the automated analysis of thousands of currency buy-and-sell postings in Telegram and Facebook groups; the calculation discards atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each transaction based on its recency, and consolidates a representative value that is updated multiple times a day.
