A Cuban expatriate and her partner unexpectedly burst into a family birthday party in Cuba, leading to a reunion that will be forever remembered: endless hugs, cries of joy, and tears that no one tried to hold back.
The moment was captured on video and posted on TikTok by the account @anettrociomelycop, identified as Anett_Mely. The images show the exact moment when the family, gathered to celebrate, discovers that the newcomers are not just any guests, but their own, returning after a time away.
"Returning to hug them was a balm for the heart, the best thing that could have happened to us. Thank you for these wonderful days, we love you so much," Anett_Mely wrote as a description of the video.
The song chosen as the background music, focused on returning home and reuniting with loved ones, enhances the emotional impact of the clip.
The video is part of a trend on TikTok that shows no signs of waning: emigrated Cubans returning to the island unexpectedly to reunite with their families, often taking advantage of birthdays or other celebrations. The most commonly seen formats include unexpected arrivals at the front door, showing up in the middle of a party — as is the case here — and the so-called "fake package," where the family thinks they are picking up a delivery but are actually greeted by a loved one.
On September 16, two more similar cases were reported: a Cuban woman who returned disguised as a bear for her nephew's birthday after four years without seeing her family, and another who arrived from Italy and reunited with her loved ones amid hugs and tears.
Days earlier, on September 11th, other Cuban women surprised their family on the island, and a father received as a birthday gift the reunion he longed for the most.
Behind each of these videos lies a reality that affects numerous Cuban families: mass emigration has separated relatives for years. According to the 2024 Demographic Yearbook from the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI), a total of 251,221 Cubans officially emigrated that year. Other academic estimates have placed the exodus at even higher figures.
The high cost of tickets and the challenges of returning cause many emigrants to spend years without being able to embrace their loved ones, making each surprise reunion an event of immense emotional significance. The numerous reactions these scenes generate on social media reflect the impact this phenomenon has within the Cuban community both on the island and abroad.
