At 8:00 PM, Cuban local time, closes this Sunday, September 20, 2026, with the dollar and euro solidifying a day of gains against the Cuban peso. Both currencies finish the day higher compared to the previous day, while the MLC shows a decline, although its quotation should be viewed with caution due to the low volume of transactions backing it.

The U.S. dollar is trading at 713 Cuban pesos (CUP) at the close of this trading day. This represents an increase of 4 pesos compared to the previous day when the greenback closed at 709 CUP. In a weekly perspective, the dollar has climbed 19 pesos from the 694 CUP recorded seven days ago, which corresponds to a rise of 2.7%. Compared to 30 days ago, the currency has gained 50 pesos from the 663 CUP, although this month-over-month comparison may partly reflect methodological adjustments to the index and not solely market movement. Today, the dollar reaches its highest point in the last 30 days, at 713 CUP, against a low of 663 CUP during the same period. It continues to set the tone for the informal market amidst a context of structural currency shortages.

The euro closes the day at 815 Cuban pesos (CUP), which represents an increase of 10 pesos compared to the previous session, when the European currency was at 805 CUP. Over the course of the week, the euro has gained 24.5 pesos from the 791 CUP recorded seven days ago, marking a rise of 3.1%. In a monthly view, the European currency has advanced 67 pesos since it was at 748 CUP 30 days ago, reflecting a 9% increase, although this figure should be interpreted with the same methodological caution. Today, the euro reaches its highest point in the last 30 days at 815 CUP, and surpasses the dollar by 102 pesos, solidifying its dominant position in the Cuban parallel market.

The MLC closes around 495 Cuban pesos (CUP), though this value should be considered indicative due to the low volume of transactions registered during this time period. Compared to the previous day, this figure represents a decline of 18.5 pesos from the 513 CUP of yesterday. However, over the last week, the MLC has accumulated a gain of 16 pesos since the 479 CUP of seven days ago. Lacking physical existence, its use is limited to state-run stores that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.

Exchange Rate Evolution

  • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 713 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 815 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 495 CUP (indicative value, limited data).

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), at 669 CUP per dollar and 767 CUP per euro, remains far below the values that apply in everyday practice in the informal currency market. The gap between the official and informal rates currently reaches 44 pesos for the dollar and 48 pesos for the euro.

Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains significantly distant from that of the informal market and fails to meet the real demand for foreign currency from the population. It is worth noting that, in the last month, the official exchange rate of the dollar has risen from 635 to 669 CUP, and that of the euro from 742 to 767 CUP, but this official adjustment has not managed to close the gap with the parallel market, which is advancing at a faster pace.

In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state wages, and the increasing partial dollarization of the economy, each fluctuation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans. This Sunday’s closure confirms that the pressure on the Cuban peso shows no signs of relief on the streets.

The Exchange Rate of CiberCuba is an index of the Cuban informal market created from the automated analysis of thousands of currency trading posts in Telegram and Facebook groups. The calculation excludes atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each transaction based on its recency, and consolidates a representative value that is updated several times a day.
