Díaz-Canel kicks up a fuss about the UN, and Cubans correct him: "What can we expect from the man of utopia?"

Miguel Díaz-Canel responded this Wednesday to the speech by Donald Trump before the UN General Assembly, but his post on social media ended up becoming a laughing stock among Cubans due to a spelling mistake that did not go unnoticed: he wrote "anaquilamiento" instead of "aniquilamiento."

The Cuban leader shared the same text on digital platforms such as Facebook and X, where he wrote: "Few times has the General Assembly of the UN been so disrespected. The organization, founded eight decades ago to prevent new wars through diplomacy, was used as an imperial platform to threaten the annihilation of other nations. #CubaIsNotAThreat, the blockade is."

The message was a reaction to the speech that Trump delivered the previous day at the 81st General Assembly, in which he described Cuba as an "absolutely failed state" and predicted that the regime would "fall."

In that same speech, Trump also threatened to "annihilate" Iran if a nuclear deal was not reached, a statement that generated extensive international coverage and that Díaz-Canel seems to have referenced when discussing threats against other nations.

The Cuban delegation at the UN walked out of the room during Trump's speech as a protest act.

But what captured attention this Wednesday was not the diplomatic protest, but the spelling mistake made by the ruler.

In the comments on his Facebook post, a user got straight to the point: "I don't think 'anaquilamiento' is the right word, but what can we expect from the man of utopia, haha."

Another replied sarcastically, "It's not that they're threatening you, they're just giving you a heads up, so you might as well run."

A third person took the opportunity to question the legitimacy of the regime: "The concept of sovereignty has several components, one of which is: Popular sovereignty: It is the principle where power resides in the citizens, who choose how to govern themselves. Does this exist in Cuba?"

The formal intervention of Cuba before the General Assembly was scheduled for September 26, when the regime would have the opportunity to officially respond to Trump before the UN plenary.
