Gias Foods, Inc. has withdrawn two lots of its frozen pasta Bettergoods Authentic Italian Lemon Alfredo Fettuccine, sold in Walmart stores across the United States, after a possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes was detected.
The recall alert was published by the FDA on September 15, 2026. The finding emerged from a routine sampling program conducted by the agricultural departments of Washington and Florida, which determined that the finished product might contain the bacteria. So far, no illnesses associated with its consumption have been reported.
The affected product is a frozen pasta weighing 22 ounces (approximately 624 grams) in a yellow plastic container, with UPC code # 194346442706. The recalled batches are # L6079C and # L6080C, with expiration dates of 09/19/2027 and 09/20/2027, both printed on the back of the packaging.
Gias Foods, a company based in New York, has suspended the distribution of the product while the FDA and the company investigate the source of the possible contamination. Those who have purchased these batches should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
The Listeria monocytogenes poses a particular danger because, unlike many other pathogens, it can survive and multiply even under refrigeration. According to the FDA, "it can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly individuals, and others with weakened immune systems."
The symptoms of the less severe form of the disease include fever, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, which typically last between one and three days. The invasive form, on the other hand, can cause headache, neck stiffness, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warn that "invasive listeriosis is a potentially deadly event, especially for newborns, adults over 65 years old, and those with weakened immune systems."
Pregnant women represent another high-risk group: although their symptoms may be mild or go unnoticed, the infection can lead to miscarriage, fetal death, premature birth, or a serious infection in the newborn.
At the beginning of September, Walmart had been involved in another recall of frozen products when Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend berries were withdrawn in 16 states due to potential contamination with E. coli.
The recalled pasta belongs to the bettergoods line, Walmart's private label launched in April 2024, featuring over 300 products in categories such as frozen goods, dairy, snacks, and beverages, with prices that mostly do not exceed 5 dollars.
A listeria outbreak in the United States in 2022 resulted in one death and more than twenty hospitalizations, highlighting the potential severity of this bacteria when timely action is not taken.
