After 138 days of specialized care, Aurora, a baby born at just 26 weeks of gestation and weighing 1,050 grams, was discharged from the hospital and finally went home with her mother in Holguín.
The Vladimir Ilich Lenin University General Hospital reported this Friday on Facebook that the Neonatology Service discharged the little one after more than four months of continuous care.
Aurora, daughter of Mirelis Linares Alonso, was born on May 9th, at 9:42 a.m., under conditions of extreme prematurity.
"From its early days, it faced the challenges of extreme prematurity, but its strength and the dedication of the team that supported it made this anticipated moment possible," stated the hospital institution.
The discharge marks the beginning of a new stage for the little one and her mother after a prolonged stay in Neonatology.
"Today marks a new chapter alongside her mother. For the medical and nursing staff who cared for her, her departure leaves memories and the satisfaction of having been part of this story," the hospital expressed.
The institution also acknowledged Mirelis's perseverance during her months of admission and wished Aurora well upon her return home.
The story provoked numerous reactions from people who had gone through similar experiences at the hospital itself.
A mother recalled that 30 years ago she gave birth there to 33-week-old twins, weighing 1,250 and 1,400 grams, and expressed her gratitude for the work done at that time by the Neonatology team.
Another user shared that her son was born at 32 weeks of gestation and stayed in the hospital for 43 days. In her message, she especially thanked the care received from nurses and neonatologists and celebrated Aurora's discharge with a wish for a "long life" for the little one.
Similar stories have recently been reported in other Cuban hospitals.
In July, Patricia, a baby born in Artemisa at just 27.1 weeks of gestation and weighing 770 grams, was able to leave the Intensive Care Unit after 82 days to reunite with her mother in shared accommodation.
The little girl had required mechanical ventilation and prolonged oxygen therapy.
Another case occurred in Guantánamo, where Ingrid Lázara García Castellanos was discharged after 105 days of care.
He was born at just 27 weeks gestation and 1,100 grams and managed to reach 2,600 grams before returning home.
The Lenin Hospital itself has also been part of other neonatal recovery stories.
In 2025, a newborn with a congenital malformation was finally able to return home after weeks of surgeries, intensive monitoring, and coordinated care among specialists from Lenin and the Regional Center for Neonatal Surgery in Holguín.
