A man was taken into police custody this Thursday in the northwest of Miami-Dade following an intense vehicular pursuit that began hours earlier with the alleged theft of a car in the parking lot of Palmetto General Hospital in Hialeah, as reported by Telemundo 51 with live aerial footage.
The incident originated on Thursday morning when agents from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office transported the suspect to the hospital, located on West 68th Street, under a Florida Baker Act order, which allows for involuntary mental health evaluation for up to 72 hours.
The man fled the medical center before completing the evaluation and, in the parking lot, approached a woman who was getting out of her vehicle and forcefully entered her Nissan Sentra black before escaping.
Upon leaving the place, he crashed into another car. Paramedics attended to the victim on site while authorities closed off a section of the parking lot.
The subsequent pursuit spread across various routes in the northwest of the county and involved deputy sheriffs from Miami-Dade and patrol officers from the Florida Highway Patrol.
During the escape, the driver drove erratically, crashed into several vehicles, and collided with a patrol car from the Hialeah Police.
The authorities attempted to stop him using multiple PIT maneuvers— a technique that involves hitting the rear of the pursued vehicle to spin it around and immobilize it— without success in the initial attempts. A fifth attempt was necessary to successfully stop the Sentra.
The live narrator from Telemundo 51 described the climactic moment: "Let's hope that he comes out, that he surrenders, because this is a critical moment where the lives of all these agents could be in danger. We do not know if this man is armed or not, but we know that he has done everything to evade the authorities."
At 1:13 PM, the vehicle was finally halted at the intersection of Northwest 17th Avenue and 79th Street. Several officers surrounded the car with their weapons drawn and removed the suspect—still dressed in hospital clothing—to handcuff him face down on the ground.
"They finally have him face down, putting on the handcuffs, a teamwork effort by several law enforcement agencies so that there is no one driving erratically through the streets of Miami-Dade, endangering people's lives," reported the narrator.
No injuries were reported either during the chase or in the parking lot incident, reported the Hialeah Police.
The authorities did not immediately confirm whether the arrested driver is the same man involved in the robbery that occurred hours earlier, and the case remains under investigation.
