Los Van Van publicly expressed their concern for the health of Pedrito Calvo, one of the most iconic voices in the history of the group, after revealing during a concert at Johnny Club in Havana that the veteran singer is ill and going through a difficult time.
The orchestra shared a video on its official Facebook page in which Jorge Leliebre, known as LeLe, briefly interrupts the presentation to ask the audience for applause dedicated to the so-called "Sandunguero Mayor."
«Pedrito Calvo, known for all those hits with Los Van Van, is sick today, today he is seriously ill, so I ask for not even a minute of silence because he deserves applause. Please, let's give a round of applause for Pedrito», expressed LeLe from the stage.
The audience responded immediately with applause, in one of the most emotional moments of the presentation.
Los Van Van accompanied the video with a message confirming that Calvo is going through a “delicate health situation”.
"During the concert, LeLe wanted to dedicate a few words and all the love from Los Van Van to the Sandunguero Mayor, Pedrito Calvo, who is going through a delicate health moment. We didn't want to miss the opportunity to send him our hug, our strength, and all our affection," the group stated.
So far, neither Los Van Van nor the artist's family have publicly informed what health issue he is facing, so there is no confirmed medical diagnosis that clarifies the causes of his current condition.
Some pages dedicated to Cuban music have reported that Calvo is hospitalized.
SuenaCuba noted that various profiles associated with musicians and communication had spread that version, although it acknowledged that there is no official statement regarding the illness.
Another page, Variados de Siempre, stated that the message would have occurred during a performance at the Johnny Club in Havana and also claimed that the singer is going through a delicate situation.
For now, the information directly supported by Los Van Van is that Calvo is experiencing a “delicate health moment”, while LeLe stated from the stage that the performer is “serious.”
The news has raised particular concern because just a few months ago, the singer was still appearing publicly and actively.
In April, Pedrito Calvo celebrated his 84th birthday and received a heartfelt congratulation from his son, Pedrito Calvo Junior, from Miami.
"The truth is that only a select club carries it with vitality and the desire to continue making history like you do," his son wrote, highlighting his father's energy and the affection of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Calvo celebrated his 84th birthday on April 17 and continued to be involved in music after a long career that made him one of the most recognizable figures in Cuban popular music. For almost three decades, he was the lead vocalist for Los Van Van and later developed his own musical project.
A little over a month after his birthday, the artist publicly discussed his decision to continue living in Cuba and stated that he feels happy on the island despite the economic and social difficulties.
"I’m here with all my difficulties, I live my life. I work for it, I fight for it, because nothing falls from the sky for me. But I am happy because I like this yard," he said then.
In that conversation, he also mentioned that part of his large family lives outside of Cuba. The singer spoke of 19 grandchildren and a great-grandchild spread across countries like Mexico, the United States, Spain, Italy, and France, and acknowledged that emigration had made it difficult to gather the whole family together.
