Pedrito Calvo returned to Havana and was welcomed at the airport by Mayito Rivera with singing, dancing, and a long hug, just days after the health issue that forced the legendary Cuban singer to be hospitalized during a layover in Panama.
Rivera shared this Monday images of the reunion on his Instagram account and accompanied the video with a message dedicated to one of the most iconic voices of Los Van Van: "I welcome the Horse of Los Van Van forever. Maestro Pedro Calvo."
In the images, Mayito approaches Calvo while singing and dancing before embracing him warmly. The welcome was marked by references to “El negro no tiene ná'”, a well-known song by Los Van Van popularized by Pedrito Calvo, and Rivera exclaimed during the meeting: “That he has nothing, my friend”.
The embrace between the two artists thus presented a different image of the episode that had only hours before raised concerns among fans and musicians: Pedrito Calvo is once again in Havana, surrounded by music, dance, and expressions of affection
The moment held special significance after the concern caused over the weekend by news about the health of the veteran artist, 84 years old, who had to receive emergency care while traveling from Havana to Cali, Colombia.
The alert was made public on Sunday, when Los Van Van requested an applause for Pedrito Calvo during a concert in Havana.
Jorge Leliebre, LeLe, then said from the stage that the singer was ill and going through a difficult health moment.
Hours later, the family explained what happened during the trip: Calvo had left Cuba on Friday, September 25, heading to Cali and, during a layover in Panama, encountered an incident that left him unconscious and required him to be taken to a hospital.
His son, Pedrito Calvo Junior, reported that the musician temporarily lost his speech and mobility, but subsequent medical tests were satisfactory, and he was finally discharged.
The family attributed the episode to an intestinal virus and stated that an MRI did not show any cerebrovascular damage.
The family statement concluded with a phrase linked to one of the most remembered themes of his career: “THE BLACK ONE HAS NOTHING!!”.
The Cuban Institute of Music also provided a different version regarding the cause of the episode, stating that Calvo had suffered a stroke.
Despite this difference between both versions, both the institution and the family agreed that the singer had been discharged and was in recovery.
