At 8:00 PM, local Cuban time, closes this Sunday, September 27, 2026, with the main currencies trending upward. The US dollar and the euro end the day above the values recorded yesterday, consolidating a trend of increasing pressure on the Cuban peso. The MLC, on the other hand, shows a reference quote that should be taken with caution given the low volume of transactions supporting it.
The U.S. dollar is trading at 740 Cuban pesos (CUP) at the close of this session. This represents an increase of 2.5 pesos compared to the previous session, when the average value was 738 CUP. In a weekly perspective, the dollar has accumulated a rise of 27.5 pesos from the 713 CUP it averaged seven days ago, which equates to an increase of 3.9%. The comparison over 30 days shows a gain of 67.5 pesos from the 673 CUP of a month ago, although this figure may partly reflect methodological adjustments of the index. Over the last 30 days, the dollar has fluctuated between a minimum of 673 CUP and a maximum of 743 CUP. It continues to gauge the pulse of the informal market amid a context of structural currency shortages.
The euro closes the day at 847 Cuban pesos (CUP), its highest value in the last 30 days according to available data. This represents an increase of 7.5 pesos compared to the previous session, when the average value was 840 CUP. Over the past week, the euro has risen 32 pesos from 815 CUP seven days ago, a gain of 3.9%. Compared to 30 days ago, when it was at 758 CUP, the increase amounts to 89.5 pesos, although the monthly comparison should be interpreted cautiously due to potential methodological adjustments. It is affirmed as the most expensive currency in the Cuban parallel market, surpassing the dollar by 107 pesos.
The MLC closes around 542 Cuban pesos (CUP), although this value should be considered indicative given the low volume of transactions recorded during this timeframe. Compared to the previous day, when an average value of 485 CUP was reported, the apparent variation is an increase of 57 pesos, although the reliability of this figure is limited. A week ago, it was at 495 CUP, and 30 days ago at 470 CUP. Without physical existence, its use is restricted to the state-run stores that accept it, limiting its circulation compared to cash currencies.
Exchange Rate Evolution
- Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 740 CUP.
- Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 847 CUP.
- Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 542 CUP (indicative value, few data).
The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), set this Sunday at 681 CUP per dollar and 776 CUP per euro, remains well below the values that prevail in everyday practice in the informal currency market. The gap between the official dollar rate and the informal rate exceeds 59 pesos; in the case of the euro, the difference is almost 71 pesos.
Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and fails to meet the real demand for foreign currency among the population. In the last month, the official exchange rate for the dollar has risen from 634 to 681 CUP, and for the euro from 739 to 776 CUP, a adjustment that has not managed to close the gap with the parallel market.
In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state salaries, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every fluctuation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans. The recent accumulated rise of the dollar and euro further exacerbates the erosion of the purchasing power of those earning in Cuban pesos.
The informal currency market in Cuba operates outside the state's financial institutions, through networks of buying and selling between individuals. Although the Cuban regime does not officially acknowledge it, this market effectively determines the real purchasing power of Cubans.
The Exchange Rate of CiberCuba is an index of the informal Cuban market created through the automated analysis of thousands of currency exchange posts in Telegram and Facebook groups. The calculation excludes atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each transaction based on its age, and consolidates a representative value that is updated several times a day.
